Aim
This project begins with women's carpentry courses to build a day shelter. The shelter will then be used to host courses.
Four years ago I added crofter to my conglomeration of west coast roles. A croft is a bit like a small holding and an important part of the Highlands and Islands.
Being a crofter is something I had longed for all my life and I was very lucky to be assigned a very beautiful croft. It demonstrates all Highland habitats within its 12 acres. I am an ecologist and food grower and animal lover. The croft combines all my loves and is a dream come true.
The lucky feeling/disbelieve I felt when I got the croft, has not left me, in fact it gets greater the more I get to know the land. I want to share this place. I want to share my knowledge and invite others in to share theirs. I want it to be a community place and a place to find connection to each other and the land.
In April this year I am hosting two carpentry courses for women to begin work on a day shelter that I have permission to build.
The courses are run by an expert tutor (also a woman) and I provide the space and materials. The materials are very expensive and much more so than I imagined and I simply do not have the funds to buy them. For this project I am aiming to raise enough for the (sustainable) foundations which cost £4000.
I believe in this project so much. It combines equality by introducing women to building skills and increasing their skills. Having attended a beginners course with the tutor last year I can testify that it is very empowering.
The fact that this day shelter will then be an off-grid venue for people to lead courses on land use, sustainability, grassroots skills and a refuge for isolated groups, makes it even more worthwhile in my opinion.
