Our Story: 20 Years of Being a Sanctuary for Families with Disabled Children

For nearly two decades, many families have called Building for the Future’s service a lifeline.

Since 2014, the wonderful Our House has been a sanctuary for disabled children and young adults across Berkshire. It’s a place where ‘different’ simply doesn't exist and where nearly 1,000 disabled children a year find joy and freedom in play, therapy and community.

Being a lifeline to so many is a wonderful privilege. We started small and now respond to so much need.

The Crisis: Why We Must Move

The demand for our services has skyrocketed, but our current space hasn't kept pace.

• The Walls are Closing In: Our rooms are cramped and outdated. Children who are sidelined elsewhere deserve space and freedom to play.
• The Parking Nightmare: Local housing developments have stripped us down to just four parking spaces. For a parents transporting a child with complex disabilities and heavy equipment, a lack of parking is a massive inconvenience and a barrier to support.
• No Room to Grow: Our young adults are outgrowing our facilities, but we have no space to help them develop the life skills and independence they deserve.

The Vision: Introducing The Ability Hub

Earlier this year, we took a leap of faith and acquired a much larger building near Reading.

We are calling it The Ability Hub.

Evolving our already vital facilities and services, The Ability Hub will feature:

• A State-of-the-Art Play Therapy Centre: Tailored to the sensory and physical needs of every child.
• An Incredible Sensory Garden: A safe, outdoor haven for exploration and peace.
• A Launchpad for Young Adults: A dedicated base for disabled young people to learn, socialise and find their purpose.

How You Can Help

The refurb is underway, but we are facing a £150,000 mountain to climb by this summer. We need these vital funds to adapt the final stages of the building, install specialist equipment and cover the increased costs of running a world-class facility.
