PLEASE HELP SAVE ASHBURTON SWIMMING POOL
Please help us save Ashburton Pool! Situated in the heart of the town and in the hearts of the community, the well-loved pool is approaching its 90th birthday and showing its age! Ashburton Swimming Pool CIO run by a group of volunteer Trustees - for the community by the community. We have discovered a substantial leak caused by a crack in the Victorian era tiles and pipework which needs urgent repairs before the pool can reopen. Unfortunately the repair will cost £100k and we are appealing to anyone and everyone to do their bit; to donate and save the pool from closure! You may have learnt to swim in this pool many years ago, or taught your children to swim, or have fond memories of splashing around and cooling off. You may look forward to bringing grandchildren, lane swimming to keep/get fit or booking a birthday party - whatever the occasion - it is clear that residents and visitors benefit from having a community swimming pool in the town and we need to act now! This is more than just a swimming pool - it is a key asset to the town, enabling users to play, exercise, socialise and have fun. More than ever, society needs local swimming pools like this one to benefit our health and wellbeing. Please dig deep - once it’s gone, it’s gone...

2Background:
The pool is open from May to September, is 21 x 9m and heated to about 27C. Next to the pool there is a lovely field for picnics and games, swings and a small cafe run by our fabulous volunteers for drinks and snacks.
Financially, year on year, the pool makes enough over the summer season to sustain itself, but the scale of this repair means we have to seek help to raise the funds.
Ashburton Swimming Pool (CIO) is a beautiful outdoor heated pool with a rich history. Located in the centre of the historic stannery town of Ashburton on the southern side of Dartmoor National Park, the pool was first opened in 1936 so now approaching its 90th Birthday! Back then it was owned by the Golden Lion Hotel, and subsequently saved and run by the Ashburton community before being taken on by Teignbridge Council. In 2016 the pool was threatened with closure, but again was saved by the community and taken on by a group of passionate Trustees.
Having the open air pool in the town means so much to the townsfolk and surrounding areas, in terms of mental and physical health benefits, social benefits all aspects that keep people in “health" rather than ill health.
In addition to the normal daylight hours opening there are evening events, like the full moon swim which is loved and well attended.
We appeal to all people who may have visited past or present or who may have learnt to swim here, or you may know someone who is an advocate of this much loved pool. Whoever you are we appeal to you. This pool must not close.
