The Albert Kennedy Trust (akt)

RCN 1093815, London

akt is the national LGBTQ+ youth homelessness charity, providing safe homes and better futures for LGBTQ+ young people. Almost one quarter of all young people facing or experiencing homelessness identify as LGBTQ+, and 78% of those cite rejection or abuse from their families as what has led them to being so. The charity was set up in Manchester in 1989 and has since opened its doors in London, Newcastle, and Bristol. akt also offers a digital service to support young people across the country. In over 30 years, akt has provided more than 250,000 nights off the street and supported over 50,000 LGBTQ+ young people at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

Please be aware that after 27th June 2023, you will no longer be able to use Nectar points as a way to donate to this project.

Coming out, or being outed as LGBTQ+, can sadly lead to young people being made homeless – even in 2024. Around 24% of young people experiencing homelessness in the UK are LGBTQ+, which is significantly disproportionate. Once homeless, LGBTQ+ young people are more likely to face violence and discrimination than young people who aren’t LGBTQ+.

akt is the national LGBTQ+ youth homelessness charity supporting young people aged 16-25 in the UK who are experiencing homelessness or living in a hostile environment. They support young people into safe homes and employment, education or training, in a welcoming and open environment that celebrates LGBTQ+ identities.

I absolutely love the idea and the prospects of the Albert Kennedy trust, how this will help and guide young LGBTQ persons into a safe and comfortable living situation. As a gay man I am very fortunate to have a living situation with friends and family that has not changed due to me in my words “becoming my true self” but as we know life/living conditions aren’t the same for everyone and this trust should bring enlightenment to the real challenges the younger LGBTQ community is facing. Really hope with all my heart this trust will aid the younger LGBTQ community with thanks to British Airways as a GOA I really think this will give it a boost the same with my other colleagues.
