What you will be doing

About Action Tutoring

Action Tutoring partners with primary and secondary state schools to deliver tutoring programmes for pupils in Years 5, 6, 7, 10 and 11 in English and maths, whose families couldn't otherwise afford this support.

We specifically help pupils facing socio-economic disadvantage who are at risk of leaving primary or secondary school without reaching national standards in their exams.

The role

We are looking for volunteers to support pupils in English or maths. As a volunteer, you will:

● Work with 1-3 pupils to improve their English or maths, in-person or online.

● Commit to a 10-20 week programme, for just one hour a week (same time and day each week).

● Support either primary or secondary school-aged pupils (you choose the subject, delivery format, age group and time that works best for you from a menu of options).

● Use our tutor workbooks to shape your weekly sessions.

What support will I get?

If you haven’t worked with children before, don't worry. We’ll support you through your volunteering programme and will provide:

● Training (a two-hour induction session online and optional webinars throughout the year)

● In-session support from your Programme Coordinator

● Tutor workbooks with session plans

● Travel expenses up to £5 per session

● A free DBS check

● Meet like-minded people in our volunteer community at tutor socials!

What we are looking for

We look for volunteers with:

● Solid subject knowledge in the area you wish to tutor, demonstrated through your professional experience or personal qualifications.

● Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain concepts clearly and patiently.

● Commitment and passion to support your pupils’ academic progress and build up their confidence.

Our tutors range in age (from 18 to 82!) and in background. We are incredibly proud of the diversity in our volunteers and the wealth of experience they bring to the role.

What difference this will make

You will be making a difference in helping young people succeed and reach their infinite potential!

By volunteering as a tutor for just one hour a week, you will be boosting the academic skills and confidence of your pupils, moving them closer to success in exams and opening doors to future opportunities in employment, education and training.

You can hear from some of our GCSE pupils on their results day here, talking about the impact that tutoring had on their journeys to success.

Our impact data shows that tutoring works! In 2024-25 our Year 6 pupils broke an Action Tutoring record in reading, and closed the gap with their better-off peers nationally, and outperformed other disadvantaged pupils by 18%.

What to bring

If you are volunteering online, you will need access to a desktop or laptop, a webcam and internet connection. We have an online support team on-hand to provide technical support, as well as online training to help you get familiar with your online classroom.
