Help pupils facing disadvantage achieve their potential and create a world where no child’s life chances are limited by their background.

Volunteering with Action Tutoring is an easy and rewarding way to make a difference to the lives of children and young people facing disadvantage. By volunteering as a tutor for just one hour a week, you will be empowering your pupils to make meaningful academic progress, opening up the doors to their futures.
As a volunteer, you can choose what subject you tutor (English or maths), the time, day, primary or secondary age group (Year 5, 6, 7, 10 or 11) and delivery format (online or in-person) that suits you best. Tutoring sessions take place at the same time each week, across the course of 10-20 weeks. You will be supporting the same two-three pupils to build their English or maths subject knowledge, confidence, study skills and growth mindset, increasing their chance of success in key SATs and GCSE exams.
Why do we matter?
Disadvantaged pupils are 19 months behind their more privileged peers, and are 50% more likely to be out of education, employment or training on leaving school. In 2022-23, just 43% passed both English and maths GCSE, compared to 73% of non-disadvantaged pupils.
But with Action Tutoring support, pupils who attend at least seven sessions could make half a grade extra progress compared to their peers.

What's our volunteer criteria?
We look for volunteers who can spare just one hour per week across the course of a programme (10-20 weeks). You don't need to have any previous tutoring experience, but we do look for:
Our online tutors can volunteer from anywhere in the UK or face-to-face in schools across a number of locations in England.
