About Action Tutoring
Action Tutoring partners with primary and secondary state schools to deliver tutoring programmes for pupils in Years 5, 6, 7, 10 and 11 in English and maths, whose families couldn't otherwise afford this support.
We specifically help pupils facing socio-economic disadvantage who are at risk of leaving primary or secondary school without reaching national standards in their exams.
The role
This academic year we have excitingly partnered with the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) to evaluate our secondary maths tutoring programme through a rigorous research study.
Your tutoring could play a key role in shaping the future of our work and the wider evidence base for effective maths support!
As a volunteer, you will:
● Work with 1-3 Year 10 or 11 pupils to improve their maths skills online, through our interactive online classroom and resources.
● Commit to a 10-20 week programme, for just one hour a week (same time and day each week).
What support will I get?
If you haven’t worked with young people before, don't worry! We’ll support you through your volunteering programme and will provide:
● Training (a two-hour induction session, introduction to our online classroom, and optional webinars throughout the year)
● In-session support from your Programme Coordinator and our online support team
● Tutor workbooks with session plans
● A free DBS check
● The opportunity to meet like-minded people in our volunteer community at tutor socials!
What we are looking for
We look for volunteers with:
● Solid subject knowledge in the area you wish to tutor, demonstrated through your professional experience or personal qualifications.
● Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain concepts clearly and patiently.
● Commitment and passion to support your pupils’ academic progress and build up their confidence.
Our tutors range in age (from 18 to 82!) and in background. We are incredibly proud of the diversity in our volunteers and the wealth of experience they bring to the role.
What difference this will make
You will be making a difference in helping young people succeed and reach their infinite potential!
By volunteering as a tutor for just one hour a week, you will be boosting the academic skills and confidence of your pupils, moving them closer to success in exams and opening doors to future opportunities in employment, education and training.
You can hear from some of our GCSE pupils on their results day here, talking about the impact that tutoring had on their journeys to success.
Our impact data shows that tutoring works! In 2024-25 Year 11 pupils who attended 10 or more Action Tutoring sessions increased their chances of passing GCSE English by 10% and GCSE maths by 13%.

What to bring
If you are volunteering online, you will need access to a desktop or laptop, a webcam and internet connection, and will need to be confident using online tools.
We will provide the training to help you become familiar with our online classroom before you begin tutoring. We have an online support team on-hand to provide technical support, as well as online training to help you get familiar with your online classroom.
Accessibility
We are a disability confident committed organisation that is dedicated to inclusivity and accessibility. If you would like to discuss any potential adjustments or concerns, you can talk to your Programme Coordinator once you are signed up as a volunteer, or contact our Head of People and Culture at [email protected].
