We'll use any additional funds to ensure we can add the personal touches to our cinema that will make it unique - our dream is to have a classic neon Cinema sign to light the way for our audiences!
What are we trying to achieve?
We want to raise £20,000 to make Plymouth Arts Centre’s independent cinema the best it can be. We are creating a new home for everyone to enjoy film and somewhere exciting for new audiences to discover the magic of cinema.
Our plans ensure a sustainable future for our independent cinema. Following the withdrawal of the Art Council’s NPO funding for Plymouth Arts Centre in April 2018, which put extreme pressure on all areas of the charity’s organisation.
What’s the story so far?
After an incredible 40 years of films at Looe Street, we are moving our cinema and bar to a new home at Plymouth College of Art's main city centre campus. This is really exciting, because we will be able to double the size of our auditorium, and at the same time retain our status as Plymouth’s only independent cinema.
We get some great feedback from visitors, and we feel that it’s really important to take the things people love about our cinema to the new location.
We know that the best way to enjoy watching a film is the shared experience of a visit to the cinema. Whether that’s seeing a foreign language arthouse offering, the latest blockbuster or attending an event with guest speakers from the film industry.
The team at Plymouth Arts Centre have decades of experience in programming, marketing and the operational running of independent cinema. We are passionate about films and want to enable as wide an audience as possible to enjoy visiting the cinema.
Our aim is to continue to bring great cultural cinema to Plymouth and the surrounding areas, and when Plymouth College of Art offered us the opportunity to build a new 118-seat auditorium, we knew it would be the right move to ensure a sustainable future.
How will the money be spent?
We are asking for your help to raise £20,000 towards kitting out the new cinema with everything it needs to feel like a new home with a warm welcome. This includes brand new seating, one of our donation rewards even includes a personalised plaque on one of these brand-new seats! We have had many messages of support from our audience since the NPO announcement, asking what can we do to help – and this is your chance to support us.
We’re very grateful to Plymouth City Council for the amazing amount of support they have given us so far, but now we’re inviting you to get involved in securing the future of Plymouth’s independent film community.
