Aim

Repair storm-damaged boats and truck so SORCE can continue vital marine conservation, research, and community work in Lombok, Indonesia.

When storms ground our boats and vehicles, conservation stops — help us get moving again.

Our Story

SORCE (Sustainable Oceanic Research, Conservation & Education) is a marine conservation field school and community-focused organisation working in Lombok, Indonesia. We exist for one simple reason: to protect and restore fragile marine ecosystems while empowering local communities to be part of the solution.

Lombok’s seas support extraordinary biodiversity — coral reefs, mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, turtles, sharks, rays, and countless fish and invertebrate species. These ecosystems are not only beautiful; they are essential for coastal protection, food security, livelihoods, and climate resilience. Yet they are under increasing pressure from climate change, extreme weather, rising tourism, plastic pollution, and overfishing.

SORCE works on the front line of these challenges, combining hands-on conservation, scientific monitoring, and education to create lasting, locally led impact.

What We Do

Our work spans research, restoration, and community action:

  • Coral reef restoration – planting and maintaining corals to help damaged reefs recover
  • Mangrove restoration – planting mangroves to stabilise coastlines, support fisheries, and store carbon
  • Ecosystem monitoring – surveying coral reefs, mangrove forests, and seagrass beds to track ecosystem health
  • Fisheries and biodiversity monitoring – assessing fish populations and ecosystem balance in response to overfishing
  • Megafauna monitoring – recording sightings and behaviour of turtles, sharks, and rays
  • Plastic pollution removal – collecting debris from oceans and beaches before it enters food webs
  • Community outreach and education – working with local villages and schools to build long-term stewardship

Everything we do is rooted in collaboration with local people, students, and early-career conservationists, ensuring skills and knowledge stay within the community.

Why Boats Matter

Our boats are not a luxury — they are our lifeline.

They allow us to:

  • Reach remote reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds
  • Transport volunteers, researchers, and equipment safely
  • Respond quickly to environmental threats
  • Carry out monitoring consistently and scientifically

Without operational boats, our conservation work simply cannot happen.

Why Our Truck Matters

Our truck is just as vital as our boats.

It allows us to:

  • Transport mangrove seedlings to multiple restoration sites
  • Carry conservation materials, tools, and monitoring equipment
  • Move dive tanks and heavy gear for reef work further along the coast
  • Deliver outreach equipment for schools and village events

Storm flooding caused extensive rusting and corrosion to the truck’s body, along with engine and structural damage. Without repairs, we cannot safely carry out mangrove planting, outreach programs, or support our in-water conservation activities.

Repairing the truck means restoring the backbone that connects our land-based and marine conservation work.

Why We Need Your Help Now

Recent extreme storms and flooding — intensified by climate change — caused significant damage to our boats and our essential project truck. What began as visible damage has worsened over time, with saltwater exposure leading to corrosion, rust, and mechanical failure. Hulls, engines, and critical components were affected, leaving us unable to safely access many of our project sites.

These storms didn’t just damage our equipment — they directly threaten the continuation of our conservation programs. Delaying repairs risks permanent damage, higher costs, and the loss of an entire conservation season.

Funds raised through this campaign will be used to:

  • Repair storm damage to our boats and truck
  • Restore engines and safety systems
  • Ensure vessels are sea- and road-worthy and reliable

This is a critical window: Every contribution helps us resume restoration work, continue supporting local communities, and get back on the water  — where our work makes the greatest difference.

The Impact of Your Support

By helping us repair our boats and truck, you are directly supporting:

  • Healthier coral reefs and stronger coastal ecosystems
  • Protection of threatened marine species
  • Reduced plastic pollution in the ocean
  • Education and empowerment of local communities
  • Science-based responses to climate change and tourism pressures

Your donation doesn’t just fix a boat or truck. It keeps conservation moving.
