What is Who Cares?

Who Cares is a play that follows 16 year old Jamie who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a long term degenerative condition, and 22 year old Dan, who lives his life to the fullest (jagerbombs included) and finds himself taking a job as an NHS domiciliary carer.

Who Cares will run at VAULT Festival, 21 - 23 Feb 2020.

This isn’t a play about disability, but a coming-of-age look at care, giving, friendship and unlikely companionship.

What is DMD?

Muscular dystrophy is a progressive condition that needs life-long management to prevent deformity and complications. Walking and sitting often becomes more difficult as the child grows. Typically, boys with DMD lose their ability to walk between the ages of ten and fourteen. Usually by the age of 12, the child needs a wheelchair because the leg muscles are too weak to work. By their late teens, young men lose the strength in their upper bodies, including the ability to move their arms. Also during their teenage years, young men with DMD usually need help with breathing at night. Heart or lung problems often occur by the late teenage years or into the early 20s.

Over time, their breathing or respiratory systems weaken, and they require constant support. Young men with Duchenne typically survive into their twenties or early thirties.

The Plan

For the second year running we are performing at VAULT Festival, where the show will run for 4 performances. This is an incredible opportunity, not only to stage a beautiful piece of work but to use the festival as a platform to further awareness and understanding of a condition that affects 2,500 boys/young men in the UK. Furthermore, it gives us a chance to work within our ethos that is giving unheard voices a platform.

This year, we have partnered with the leading DMD Charity, Muscular Dystrophy UK and they are supporting our project. Funds raised will fund the production and also help set up post-show talks, workshops and outreach that we plan deliver in the London Borough of Lambeth.

We want Who Cares to inspire and spark conversation about the condition, the difficulties behind a life with the condition but also raise awareness of the this genetic condition of which 100 boys are born with in the U.K each year.
