Help us fund “What Do You See?”; The PappyShow’s brand new theatre production and outreach project exploring unconscious bias.

Hello!

We are The PappyShow, a playful, physical ensemble theatre company creating distinctive and critically acclaimed productions. We tell stories platforming the marginalised identities that we believe society could do better with.

We believe the most diverse rooms are the richest and most likely to thrive. In a world where we have to argue that Black Lives Matter, for disabled rights, for equal pay, against sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism - The PappyShow places these communities at the centre of the story and says' WE SEE YOU

Following the hugely successful 'BOYS' at the London International Mime Festival in 2020, we’ve been given the amazing opportunity to return with our brand-new show 'What Do You See?'; a multidisciplinary production exploring unconscious bias asking us to consider the question, when you look at someone, What Do You See?

This is where we need your help!

We believe the conversation about challenging bias is one of the most important we could be having right now, and we’re so excited to make this show after a number of phenomenal Research and Development periods. Sadly, our application for funding by Arts Council England wasn’t successful this time and although the project is already partially funded, we need some support in overcoming this final hurdle.

Whilst we are looking at ways of scaling back the show, as a project all about representation, equality and being seen, there’s a few things we know we can’t budge on. This is where you come in.

We are aiming to raise £10,000 to put towards the following costs:

£4000 on access costs

It is vital to us that disability is represented in our work and 'What Do You See?' provides a platform for disabled performers to shine. We want this process to be welcoming, comfortable and fully accessible. This is why some of our funding will be going towards covering the access costs needed to ensure every member of our company is properly supported in rehearsals and performance. Whether this involves paying for taxis, Personal Assistant fees or equipment to ensure our rehearsal room is comfortable, it is our priority to make sure all access needs are met.

£5000 on paying our cast and creatives fairly

Our 12-strong cast and team of 27 freelance creatives represent the spectrums of race, disability, sexuality, age and body shape, plus all the diverse intersectional identities in Britain today. It’s a large cast, it’s a large creative team and we can’t have this important conversation without them being a part of it. Artist care and sustainability is at the heart of our company and the money we raise in this crowdfunder will ensure members of the company are all paid an equal, fair and liveable wage on this project.

£1000 on Outreach

A key aim for 'What Do You See?' is for the conversation around unconscious bias to continue long after the performance has finished. To achieve this, we are creating a number of wraparound projects including: post show talks and discussions held by the communities we are representing, workshops for audiences and young people surrounding the topics discussed in the show that will go into schools, organisations and communities as well as an educational resource pack. More than anything, we want to provide our audience (particularly young people) with a toolkit, equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to have the often challenging conversation about unconscious bias with confidence.  Some of the money you help us raise will go towards making this happen.

Please join The PappyShow by supporting us however you can. Spread the word and tell all your friends!

We’re incredibly grateful to you. Thank you from us all!

Love,

The PappyShow! Xxx
