The New Library at Victoria Primary. 

We are applying on behalf of the pupils at Victoria Primary School. We have been in the current school building for 177 years and are soon moving to a brand new school. 

We Would like to  buy for the New Library:

• Fiction books
• Non-fiction books
• Posters
• An area rug
• Computer for research
• Beanbags
• Audio books 
• Listening centre

Our Story:

In the last two years we have suffered three major floods - which has damaged our library books. We will have a brand new library in the new school and wish to have new stock. We promote reading for enjoyment at home and at school. New library books will help this aim. Our pupil population is very diverse, many families do not have books at home nor, because of Covid, have access to libraries. 

Improving literacy rates by providing a range of interesting and engaging fiction and non-fiction texts promotes better life chances and improved health and wellbeing. We have 294 pupils but will be increasing in size, with a new Nursery also being built within the new building. This library will be open to all of our pupils.

We currently have pupil librarians and members of staff who supervise and organise the library. They promote this amongst the other pupils by presenting at assemblies, running book clubs, creating library competitions, posters etc.

When we established the current library about 5 years ago, we invited in writers, illustrators and storytellers to motivate the children to read more and to use the library. We plan to do similar events virtually when we move to the new school.

We know that some children are reluctant readers and each class will be allocated an amount of funding to select their own choices of books for the library. 

This will motivate and improve long term reading rates.

It would be very disappointing to have an amazing new school without a library to match!
