We established Campbeltown Whisky Company Ltd. in January 2020 and aim to bottle our first cask under our own independent bottling brand, Watt Whisky, later this year.
With the Watt Whisky brand, we want to do what Mark has always aimed for, which is to bottle good, honest whisky for drinking and enjoying. For us, it's all about the taste, so as long as it's good then we'll be happy to put our name to it (literally!). The emphasis will be on Scotch Whisky (single malt, blended malt and blends with the odd grain thrown in) but further down the line, who knows? Whatever we are bottling it'll be single cask, cask strength, non-chill filtered and natural colour though.
Between us we have over 40 years (eek!) experience in the Scotch Whisky industry and after many years of working for other people we have decided that now is the time to strike out on our own.
Starting a new business is never easy, or cheap! We are confident that once we are up and running, we'll be able to make a success of the business. Thanks to years in the industry, we have good access to casks, established route to market and we certainly know a decent whisky when we taste it!
However, as a new company, before we get to that point, there are a lot of costs that need to be paid up front; samples, label design and printing, cask purchases, bottling, etc, etc.
This is where we need your help. Although we've invested our own money in this project, the initial costs involved are too high for us to cover on our own, without compromising the quality of the products we want to offer. By supporting us you'll help us to avoid borrowing and to strengthen our cash flow position. This will allow us to sample more casks and choose from a greater variety for our first release. It also means that we'll be able to do a first release of 4 or 5 casks (on top of the one we are offering as part of this crowdfunder) rather than just one.
A bit of background for those that don't know us;
Mark started off at the renowned Quaich Bar in the Craigellachie Hotel at the tender age of 18 before moving to the big city and gaining experience at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and Royal Mile Whiskies while studying for his marketing degree. He then headed up the Sales Team at Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky Ltd. before moving to William Cadenhead Ltd. where he became Director of Sales, with full responsibility for cask selection.
I (Kate) have worked in Sales & Marketing at two of Scotland's finest family owned distilleries. Firstly at Springbank in my home town of Campbeltown then at Glenfarclas in Speyside. I was responsible for key export markets, mainly in places I speak the language (France, Spain, Italy, etc). In recent years, I have been hosting tastings and walking tours in Campbeltown.
Campbeltown, as many whisky fans will know, has a rich distilling heritage. Once home to over 35 distilleries, there are now 3 continuing this great tradition. Despite the vast numbers of distilleries that have been established here over the years, to our knowledge there has never been an independent bottler established in the town (Cadenhead's moved here in 1972 from Aberdeen). We aim to change that.
We've chosen Campbeltown as a base, not just because of its great whisky heritage but also because it is our home! I'm a Campbeltown native and Mark has enthusiastically adopted it as his home town since moving from Speyside just before the birth of our first child. Campbeltown has a lot to offer, not just in terms of whisky, but also as a place to bring up a family.
By setting up our business here, we hope to add to the already impressive whisky offering for visitors and to contribute to the local community and economy.
We hope to be able to bottle our first cask towards the end of 2020 but, things being as they are and with all the current uncertainty worldwide, we can't provide a specific date at this time. We'll keep you updated on our progress though!
In the future, we also hope to establish a tasting room at our premises in Campbeltown so that visitors can come and taste our product with us. In the meantime, we plan to host tastings at other venues in and around Campbeltown (once the Covid-19 restrictions have lifted).
We wanted to try to offer something unique in exchange for your support, rather than simply a donation (although you are more than welcome to do that if you wish!) so essentially what we are doing is pre-selling tastings in Campbeltown and/or the bottles from our first ever cask.
Tasting tickets can be used at any of our scheduled tastings (once we are able to do them again, and subject to availability) but must be booked in advance. There's no expiry date on these so you can use your free tasting whenever you want. Your t-shirt will be sent out within a couple of months of the Crowdfunder finishing - remember to choose the size you want when you choose your reward.
By buying a bottle, as well as receiving a great bottle of whisky in a few months time, you will also become a 'Watt Whisky Bud' which will give you access to exclusive 'Whisky Buds' news, merch and events. The first cask will be chosen by us, well mainly by Mark, and only available to Crowdfunder supporters. We can't tell you what it will be, cause we don't know yet (although we have a couple of ideas) so you'll just need to trust us that we'll pick something good!
We have teamed up with The Whisky Exchange to allow us to ship your bottle to you (depending where you live) if you're unable to pick it up in Campbeltown. More details about shipping can be found below.
Bottles can be collected in Campbeltown or shipped to you. Please select which option you require when purchasing your reward (shipping options are below the t-shirt sizes). If you wish to have your bottle of whisky sent to you please add the relevant postage and packing price, listed below, as a donation when you place your order.
The bottles will be dispatched by our good friends at The Whisky Exchange so best to check using the link below that they will ship to your country, and whether there are any additional charges to pay on delivery.
Please note at the time of writing we believe that we are able to ship to all of the countries listed below in the different groups. As the bottling will not take place for some months shipping regulations may change. In the event of any change we will endeavour to get your bottle to you by another means or offer you a full refund.
