I am standing to be the next Labour MP for Vauxhall. I joined the Labour Party because I believe that this is the only political party that stands for social justice and equal opportunity.
I am pro EU and will campaign tirelessly for the UK to remain. I will never vote for Vauxhall residents to be poorer. I have seen how Brexit is dividing our community, putting local jobs, opportunities and businesses at risk. I want to work with local businesses and EU residents living in Vauxhall to make clear that they are welcome here.
As the eldest of three girls from a single parent family, growing up on the Cowley Estate and the Somerleyton Estate in Brixton, my values were shaped from an early age and I have carried these values with me as a carer for my mum, a local councillor, a mother and now as the local Assembly Member.
As a lifelong Lambeth resident, I know the issues in this community because I am from this community. Vauxhall is my home. I know what it means to struggle – against poverty, against discrimination, against bad housing and against crime. I went to school locally attending Durand Primary and then St Helen’s School. If selected I will be the first person elected for this seat to be educated in Lambeth since the seat was created in 1950.
Vauxhall faces so many challenges and yet has so much potential. Austerity, racism, hate crime, climate change and Brexit – these all damage us. But the root cause of our problems is the inequality and poverty that scars our community.
Today knife crime in Vauxhall has become an epidemic. Girls and boys who grew up on the same estate as me are dying. It is only a Labour Government that will invest in our communities and bring an end to the austerity and cuts. I am ambitious for Vauxhall and I want a child from the Stockwell Gardens Estate to have the same life chances as a child from Clapham Town.
As a new candidate, running an election campaign costs money and unlike the Tories, our local Labour campaign will be funded by generous donations from family, friends, local groups and supporters.
I would be honoured to be the next Labour Member of Parliament for Vauxhall. I will be a strong local voice campaigning on issues that matter to local residents.
Thank you for supporting my campaign.
