While governments and citizens across the world are fighting the Covid-19 pandemic domestically, the global community must come together to support those in the parts of the world least able to handle this devastating crisis. Turquoise Mountain is asking for your support to help us assist families in our community that have been most immediately affected.
Turquoise Mountain is rooted in Murad Khani, a neighbourhood in Kabul’s Old City, and over the past 14 years, has restored 150 historic buildings and established an Institute for artisans, a primary school and a clinic in the area. But it is the local community that brings them to life. As Covid-19 has spread, we have seen the markets empty and the normally bustling streets go quiet. Families are now at home, and many are cut off from essential livelihoods and unable to support themselves.
In Afghanistan, the economic ramifications of Covid-19 complicate an already acute humanitarian crisis and humanitarian organisations are struggling to meet increasing needs. While Turquoise Mountain is primarily an arts and heritage organisation, we are launching this extraordinary appeal so we can do our part to ensure that the most vulnerable families in our community are not forgotten.
We are aiming to raise £40,000 to provide food supplies for 100 vulnerable families in Murad Khani, and 100 of the most vulnerable families in the carpet weaving communities in Northern Afghanistan. Our initial goal (£16,000) was sufficient to cover their basic food needs for a month, and with your support we now hope to support them for additional months.
Through our family health clinic, we have identified 100 vulnerable households in Kabul’s Old City and will distribute an essential food supply package including staples like rice, lentils, and cooking oil to assist them immediately and directly. In Northern Afghanistan, the most vulnerable families have been identified and will be supported by our long-time partner LabelSTEP, a fair trade organisation committed to enhancing the wellbeing of weavers and their families.
One month’s supply of food costs only £80 per family, and all funds raised in this campaign will go directly toward emergency support. We know that resources will be stretched across many important causes in the months ahead – even a modest contribution can have a massive impact in such a vulnerable community. We offer our sincerest thanks for your support.
