A fashion and textile studio offering affordable workspace during the week and welcoming workshops to those wanting to learn at the weekend.
In case you can't play the video, here's the essence of it:
Hi! My name is Lydia. I'm a seamstress and I need your help, to transform this factory attic into a fully equipped sewing studio.
The plan is to turn it into a fashion and textile hub for professionals to use during the week and a welcoming workshop space for those wanting to learn new sewing skills at the weekend.
This is where I need your help! I need to fill this studio with sewing machines, irons, cutting tables, thread, fabric and scissors, but I can't invest in doing that until my Spring 2018 workshop series has been completely pre-booked. So if you would like to learn how to make your dream wardrobe come to life, book onto one of my weekend workshops today. I have everything from bras, to bomber jackets, to dresses to dungarees!
I'm fiercely passionate that the garment trade shouldn't be pushed out of London and out of the UK as a whole. In order to thrive we need collaboration and community support. If you believe that skills should continue to be passed on from heart to hand, any pledge you can make will be put to great use
Two years ago I gave away all my clothes and made a whole new wardrobe from scratch. It felt incredible to finally feel like me in the clothes I wear. Since then I've been on the road sharing my skills by teaching sewing workshops to budding seamstresses all around the UK. But i'm now ready to give my business its own permanent home. I've taken a massive leap of faith with this beautiful bright studio space in central London. With your support I know I can turn it into a creative fashion and textile collective.
FAQs:
When will we open? Fingers-crossed Saturday 21st April 2018 (Just in time for Fashion Revolution Week!)
Where will we be? Saint John Street, London. 5 minutes walk from Farringdon and Barbican underground stations.
I work in fashion and textiles and I would like to become a member of the studio during the week. How can I get in touch? Great news, drop me an email on [email protected]
I would like to sign up to your mailing list or get in contact with you about this project. What is the best way to do that? Head over to www.threadworkslondon.com
Where can I see what we will be making on the workshops? Head over to www.threadworkslondon.com
Is there parking? Yes, there is on-street parking but it is very expensive Monday to Saturday (free all day on Sunday). I would recommend coming by bike or public transport if possible.
Do I need to bring anything to the workshops? Just yourselves! I'll provide everything you need for the making. However, you may wish to bring your lunch, which you can eat during the lunch break in the studio. Otherwise, there are lots of great cafes in the local area to pop out to.
How do you work out the sizing or the garments? I use standard Women's UK Sizing for my patterns.
Can I alter the pattern? Yes, that is the joy of making your own clothes. If you want to make a sleeve longer or a leg more tapered, I will be on hand to show you how to do that.
Do I get to keep the pattern? Yes, you will take home a copy of the pattern so that you can make as many versions of the garment as you like, now that you have the skills!
Are your workshops open to men, people identifying as gender non-binary or cisgender? Yes. The majority of people who come on my workshops are women but everyone is welcome. If are not female and you would like to join us, please go ahead and book and then drop me an email to say you have done so. I will then ask for a few body measurements from you so that I can adapt the relevant pattern. It would be very helpful if you give me at least one week's notice before the workshop.
Do you have disabled access? I'm afraid the studio is on the 4th floor of a very old factory building and at present there is no lift. However, as my business grows it is my priority to have a space which is fully accessible.
If I book and then I can't make it can I have a refund? I'm afraid places are non-refundable once booked. However you could try selling the place on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook, using the hashtag #threadworksworkshops
