On 10th November 2019 we successfully raised £6,023 with 105 supporters in 35 days

A documentary about the life and work of Nick Darke and his influence on artists, creatives and the wider society.

by Jane Darke in Padstow, England, United Kingdom

New stretch target

Any extra money raised means we can spend longer on the editing process of the documentary, as well as spreading the word of Nick's work through festivals and other means of distribution.

A film about Nick's influence on the work and lives of those who knew him or his projects.

About The Film

Nick was a writer of passion and originality, both political and inspirational. His work is about community and corruption, the lives of ordinary people and the natural world. Since his death his influence has continued to grow. Why is he still relevant, how has this come about, who has benefited, what have they done with what he gave them? What did he gain from the people he lived and worked with?

We are crowdfunding to make the final interviews and to edit the film. If we receive enough money we'll use it for publicity and sending it to film festivals. We want to get this finished now so that we can submit it to the Sheffield Documentary Festival in February 2020. We've had support so far from Hall for Cornwall, Rick Stein and Freerange Films. We've interviewed more than 20 people and 8 productions of Nick's work from rehearsal to performance! We still have a few interviews to make and the film is about 80% recorded.

The Nick Darke Documentary will include conversations with artists and non-artists who knew or were influenced by Nick. These include Mark Jenkin (filmmaker), Jim Carey (composer), Bec Applebee (actress), Tilly Vosburg, (actress/director), Roger Michell (film and theatre director), Mike Shepherd (theatre director and actor), Lesley Manville (actress), Phil Jackson (actor), Callum Mitchell (poet), Shazz Andrew (actress/writer), Bert Biscoe (poet), Henry Darke (playwright), Mike England (cox of Padstow lifeboat), Brian Bait (fisherman), Anna Marie Murphy (poet and playwright), Ruth Williams (naturalist/CWT), Anna Triggs (National Health worker) and Jennie Crow (actress).

Meet the Makers

Filmmakers Jane Darke and Andrew Tebbs

It is the right time for this film to be made, as Nick is high in the minds of many people. Last August Nick would have turned 70 years old and there were many events to celebrate all he'd achieved and the work he'd inspired. This documentary is to recognise his influence and when better to share this than in his seventieth year.

Jane Darke is a documentary director, painter and writer. She made a film about Atlantic debris titled The Wrecking Season in 2005, as well as The Art of Catching Lobsters, about grief in 2009. In 2017 she made a film about the poet Charles Causley, and all have been broadcast on BBC FOUR. She works and exhibits at Tregona Chapel, St Eval, on the North Coast of Cornwall. Her book Held by the Sea was published by Souvenir Press in 2010. Jane has also made several radio programmes BBC Radio 4.

Andrew Tebbs in an artist, photographer and filmmaker. He has a long track record of making short films and has made two full length documentaries with Jane Darke as editor.
