Aim

The Feminist Bookshop’s mission is to support and promote female writers and provide a community space which is open to all.

The Feminist Bookshop Needs You!

Help us raise the funds we need to launch on 16th November.

What is The Feminist Bookshop?

The Feminist Bookshop is an independent bookshop and plant-based café based in central Brighton, opening in November 2019.

It all began a couple of years ago when the bookshop's founder, Ruth, started running a feminist bookclub in living rooms around Brighton and Hove. Initially just looking to make some new friends and share a love of books about feminism, the amazing community that grew out of it inspired her to take it to the next level - and convert her living room into a feminist bookshop!

The idea is to build a community space, encouraging people of any gender to come together in a fun, open space for dialogue, discussion and debate.

We want to support and promote female writers, creatives and entrepreneurs in all that we do. We'll stock a range of books written by and about women, host events celebrating female artists and provide a space to talk about the issues that affect us, all while sipping delicious teas, coffees and cakes sourced from awesome female-owned businesses.

Why are we crowdfunding? How will the money be spent?

We've got the space on Upper North Street but there is still so much work to do to convert it from a living room back to a shop.

We are decorating the space ourselves but need to raise funds to buy furniture, supplies for the café, licences and insurance and to purchase the initial stock of books.

Everything we raise will go towards making it the most incredible space we possibly can.

What are the rewards for supporting The Feminist Bookshop?

Apart from receiving our eternal gratitude and lots of love (which are obviously a given) we have some fab rewards for supporting us.

Gift vouchers

You can purchase gift vouchers to spend on any item in the shop (or on our website once this is up and running). This is a brilliant way to support us, especially if you're planning on popping in when we're open. Vouchers will be valid to spend for six months after the launch on 16th November.

Tote bags

We have a limited number of feminist bookshop tote bags available in pink, blue and natural colours. They are all hand-screen-printed in the UK and made from organic cotton (and recycled plastic bottles in the case of the natural tote). Stock up for friends and family; they're the perfect Christmas gift!

Book club subscriptions

Sign up to our fiction or non-fiction book club and receive a new book delivered to you every month. You'll also be invited to join a meet-up at the bookshop the following month to share thoughts on the book.

Supporters' supper

Join us for a delicious plant-based feast to celebrate the opening of the bookshop at 7pm on 23rd November 2019. Our fabulous private chef will serve a three course supper in the dining room above the shop with stunning views out to the sea. Supper includes a little something sparkling on arrival and a glass of wine with each course.

Donations

Of course, if you are feeling rather generous, donations of any size would be incredibly welcome to help us get the bookshop up and running.

Thank you so much to everyone who has already offered so much support in many different ways. It is honestly so appreciated and we can't wait to welcome you in to our little haven on Upper North Street very soon.

Lots of love,

The Feminist Bookshop Team
