Our vision

The Clay Room is a new shared ceramics studio in Leicester. We have just secured a beautiful space within the creative community of Makers' Yard in Leicester’s Cultural Quarter.  We're currently transforming the empty space into an efficient and welcoming studio.

The Clay Room is a supportive, inspiring shared makerspace, offering the tools and equipment needed for many ceramic making processes. Our aim is to support emerging and existing ceramicists in furthering their practice, whether for professional or personal interest.

Using the shared studio model ensures that makers can access affordable studio space but also share their skills and knowledge. Creativity is a social process, the benefits of interaction within a shared studio include: improved development of individual practice, increased networking and opportunities to collaborate with other makers and the wider community.

How does it work?

The Clay Room is a studio space for anyone with an interest in working with clay. We offer membership for experienced makers, plus a range of opportunities for the wider community to engage with clay through a range of classes to suit all ages and abilities.

Membership

The Clay Room offers a monthly membership scheme providing an affordable communal studio space. Anyone with sufficient experience of working with clay and the ability to work independently can apply. There will be three levels of membership you can choose from to suit your needs …and we will limit membership numbers so that the studio is never too busy.

What it includes:

  • 24 hour open access to a self-contained, shared studio space.
  • a shelved personal storage space
  • Communal firings
  • The opportunity to contribute to a public events program and to develop the studio as a whole
  • Opportunities to promote your work through our website
  • Opportunities to exhibit and sell your work
  • The opportunity for members to order materials collectively, reducing costs.
  • Access to business support though our partners at LCB depot

Classes

People of all abilities are welcome to sign up for our classes. Our classes are student led, so after being taught the basic methods of pinching, coiling and slabbing participants will be encouraged to develop their own creative ideas and styles of making and explore the possibilities of working with clay.

We have recently introduced two hour taster sessions where you can be introduced to clay and the studio…you can just come and have a go if you are not able to commit to a longer session.

Our Clay Days are 6 hour sessions that run at weekends and are suitable for beginners and more experienced potters. We also run evening classes in 6 week blocks of 2 hour sessions.  Again these are suitable for any level of ability.

….And both our clay days and evening classes can be used as an in-road course for beginners who are keen to become members. Come and build your skills and confidence and when you feel ready to go solo sign up for our membership scheme.

Why we need your support?

We have found the perfect space to start our clay community, it offers 30sqm of studio space, and a separate kiln room. However, to set up the studio space and purchase all the equipment will cost just over £10,000, and this is where you come in.

With your support we can turn the empty space into a ceramics studio that is both efficient and welcoming. So what will your pledge be spent on?

  • A pledge of £20 will enable us to purchase one shelving unit to store the work of our members and classes
  • £50 means we can buy a banding wheel
  • Around £100 will buy the timber we need to build a workbench or wedging table
  • For £400 we can buy a height adjustable table to make our studio more accessible
  • A table top slab-roller costs £800
  • £1200 will fund one of potters wheels we need
  • To help us reclaim our clay we need a pugmill costing around £2000
  • £3,000 funds a medium sized kiln.

Whether you make a donation or pledge a sum to receive a reward, you are helping us reach our fundraising target.
