The Big Anchor Project

We wish to raise the funds to re-build the website of the Big Anchor Project which was destroyed as a result of a malicious hack in 2017.

by Nautical Archaeology Society in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England

We did it
On 9th February 2018 we successfully raised £2,750 with 61 supporters in 56 days

Old anchors can be found all over the world, in every port or coastal town. Rusting away in forgotten corners, set up on plinths as memorials and even decorating roundabouts and gardens.

Thanks to the BIG Anchor Project there is a simple and fun way to record these heritage assets and an opportunity to learn more about their place in our maritime history.

The record could be easily shared on social media via the the BIG Anchor Group on Facebook or recorded in a more scientific way by measuring and photographing the anchor and uploading it on to the project website database which is free for anyone to access.

Why we need your help

Unfortunately the project website was subjected to a malicious hack in 2017 meaning we need to raise funds  to redesign and rebuild the site so that the information can continue to be uploaded and shared. We have received a quotation from a website design company who we would like to commission to undertake the work as soon as the funding is in place.

Anchors are everywhere
