Aim

A collaboration between White Crypt Project Space and Dream Guide Tree Carr to produce a 30 Card Oracle Deck inspired by artists' dreams.

What is The Artists' Oracle?

The Artists’ Oracle is a unique initiative galvanised by the collaborative effort of White Crypt and Tree Carr, a dream guide and author, whose work explores the esoteric realms of dreams, death and divination.

Together, we are inviting 30 artists to each produce one unique artwork that will be used to produce a single card, that will then become part of The Artists’ Oracle deck. There is no other comparable project of its kind; The Artists' Oracle is exceptional for its attempt to bring together unique artworks - conceived and made especially for this initiative - in such a format.

Each artist is invited to work with their dreams as inspiration for their design. The artists will be introduced to the concept of ‘conscious dreaming’, where a person explores the depths of their unconscious mind through interpreting and engaging with their dreams. Through a series of workshops with the artists, Tree Carr will help guide them on their journey. After the workshops the artists will produce their designs, drawing upon their experiences and the practices they have developed. In this way, The Artists’ Oracle will be a conduit into a collective imagination, offering a unique and exciting opportunity to engage with artworks in a very special format. Oracle cards are commonly used to gain insight into one’s own emotions and feelings. A card is drawn at random from the deck and you are invited to reflect on its meaning as an aid to self-reflection and mindfulness.

Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung believed that dreams present an important view into the collective unconsciousness and that many of the symbols and images contained in our dreams have a universal meaning. Jung believed that the collective unconscious was an inherited collection of knowledge and images, also called archetypes, that every human being has at birth. He believed that for the most part individuals are unaware of the images and ideas contained in their collective unconscious. However, at times of personal crisis - and we could also say here global crisis - the psyche can open a door to the collective unconscious and to images contained in the unconscious, both of which might be accessed through dreams.

How to use The Artists’ Oracle

The cards can be used as a daily ritual, or when you feel that you need some guidance in your life. Shuffle the cards and pull out the one that you feel drawn to. The cards might highlight your emotional state of mind, provide you with an answer that resonates, or just simply give you the right amount of energy to keep you going!

Surrender yourself to the cards and their symbols, and let your inner guide teach you what needs to be learned today. Remember that each interpretation is subjective to your own being and that their narratives will vary from day to day. Some symbols might bring back memories, show your deepest aspirations, or reflect your desires and fears. Simply notice what comes to mind and embrace it.

Who we are

1615031282_crowd-11.jpg

Anaïs Lerendu & Maddie Brown (White Crypt, London)

White Crypt is a project space dedicated to working with emerging artists and budding curators. We present solo and group exhibitions, as well as performances and events, in a unique setting. The space is located in the crypt of St Mark’s Church, Oval, London.

White Crypt believes in the power of community as evidenced through our gathering of both UK-based and international artists and curators, and our desire to welcome those  within and outside of the art circle. Indeed, as we are situated beneath a church in the heart of south London - and given the eccentric, unimposing and honest nature of the space - White Crypt has been able to develop a unique relationship with its immediate neighbourhood.

The space was founded by Anaïs Lerendu who opened White Crypt in November 2016 and Madeleine Brown joined as co-director in June 2019.

White Crypt is a non-profit company registered in England and Wales.
