Story & Truth told by Ian Douglas will be published as a picture book, for the first time, with illustrations by Ben Javens.
Story & Truth is the tale of two characters; Story – a young man who travels the world meeting new people and being welcomed into their homes and Truth – an elderly lady who carries the weight of the world on her shoulders.
When the two meet Truth asks why it is that she is never welcomed into peoples homes in the same way that Story is, the two make a pact to continue on their journey together and to endeavour to make the world a better place.

I first heard this story as told by Ian, around a campfire at the wonderful Just So Festival, a simple tale, with an important message, on hearing it for the first time I could clearly see young Story in his glittering cloak, travelling the world and weathered Truth with the weight of the world on her shoulders. A story told in person is a wonderful thing, a beautifully crafted book is the next best version and one that can carry Ian's words to a wider audience.

With the funds raised we will print 1000 copies as a first edition, the book will be printed as a hard back, full colour, picture book, with illustrations by Ben Javens.
10% of profit made from the subsequent sale of the books will be donated to the following children’s literacy charities:
National Literacy Trust work with schools and communities to give disadvantaged children the literacy skills to succeed in life.
Give a Book are dedicated to promoting books and the pleasure of reading in the hardest places, they work in prisons, schools and with disadvantaged children.

Ian Douglas is a Storyteller and Theatre Maker who works extensively across the British Isles. With over 20 years of experience delivering storytelling, performance and theatre activities for schools, arts organisations, communities and festivals across Britain, he has developed a practised approach which mixes sensitivity, comedic energy and wit leading to a style all of his own.
"What I love about storytelling is its simplicity. Stories meet us half way and we, the audience, have to be complicit for them to be successful. The stories I like to tell are fun, inviting and light hearted – even the serious ones! I believe that storytelling has a unique ability to connect people, not only to each other but to the past, the future and to the world around us."

He also works as a designer and illustrator for Studio Anorak on commissioned projects as well as the quarterly published children’s magazines Anorak and dot.
Those that know him will no doubt tell you he can be a bit of a curmudgeon but that deep down there is a happy soul trying to get out and those that know his work will no doubt see the battle between happy and sad in the characters he draws, a perfect fit for the themes within this short story.

How brave is the wren is a travelling children’s book shop, stocking beautifully crafted and illustrated stories created by authors and illustrators. The bookshop operates from “The Wren” a converted caravan which first took flight at Just So Festival in August 2015. Since then we have travelled to festivals, markets and schools all over the UK.
This project successfully funded on 7th March 2021
