This year, 2018, the East Kent Railway Trust took a gamble, a gamble on operating a steam engine for the first time in over 15 years. The engine has operated successfully and the East Kent Railway would like to be able to offer this great experience for our visitors and guests in the future. The EKR is not in a position to purchase its own steam locomotive but has been offered the opportunity to retain Peckett 0-4-0 No.2087 "Achilles" longer term. This will help the EKR raise funds, improve its offering and help secure a sustainable future for the railway. Theres one hitch, a boiler certificate..... the steam engine can operate until the end of 2020 and then it need a minor overhaul. We have the team, tools and space to do these specialist works but not the cash. We need to raise £10,000 to retain the locomotive at the EKR until the end of 2027. This means we would be able to operate steam in 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 as an absolute minimum. During the time we are operating the locomotive and growing our audience we will be able to invest money made from the operation of the locomotive and other attractions into long term plans to ensure the line is sustainable for years to come. The East Kent Railway is the only remnant of a once thriving coal and light railway industry based in East Kent. We believe its vitally important to tell the story of our heritage to younger generations before its completely forgotten.
