The IOW Ferry companies Red Funnel and Wightlink are regarded as the most expensive in the world... justifiably. Return fares often exceed £200 for a standard car to cross a four mile stretch of water. Notoriously unreliable, slow and at weekends with no availability, the Isle of Wight is plunging into socio economic decay caused by antiquated connectivity.
World leading infrastructure specialists Arup, are poised ready to perform a Solent fixed link viability study. They are confident that this project is viable and feasible, but the evidence must be provided. Their findings will be presented to the government and relevant council administrations both on the island and mainland.
Through protracted negotiation, the study has been discounted to just £120,000. Over £24,000 has been raised by islanders, visitors and businesses, but extra help is now required.
This finalised project will provide better connectivity, faster & cheaper journey times, and allow islanders the freedom they deserve.
Crucial benefits will be an immediate six minute reliable tunnel drive or bus ride to mainland NHS / Hospital / Cancer treatments, job opportunities, benefitting businesses delivering on and off, educational prospects, etc.
Ferry ports at Southampton & Portsmouth are currently looking at introducing clean air zone charges, which will add even more expense to your cross Solent journey. The Solent tunnel will not enter these cities.
This is a non profit campaign. All involved are volunteers.
The Department of Transport replied with a letter, and quoted: "On the question of a fixed link between the Isle of Wight and mainland England; the Government would of course consider the merits of such a plan, should one come forward that is both viable and demonstrably good value for money."
Without the viability study concluded, we are unable to move forward further. Please donate to help provide the change desperately needed.
