The Brunswick (Hove) is part of a national initiative launched by Music Venue Trust to prevent the closure of hundreds of independent music venues.
Our venue faces potential closure because since the COVID-19 crisis began we have had zero income. With a list of outgoings and previous liabilities as long as your arm, it doesn't take long for things to look bleak.
Whilst we appreciate and fully support the need for social distancing, our beloved industry has not received the full support that it deserves. As a large venue we are not eligible for the government grants, business interruption loans are like hen's teeth and there have been complications and hold-ups with claims for Furlough pay.
We have a dedicated and wonderful team of bar and kitchen staff that we support and intend to keep hold of. As an independent Free House, we deal with a lot of small local businesses (just like us!) that require our continued support as well as the numerous musicians, promoters and sound engineers that rely on year-round work from one of Brighton & Hove's best-loved venues. Not to mention all of our wonderful customers that visit us week-in week-out for live music, food, drinks, and private hire.
Your donations will be used to keep our venue afloat during an extended period of closure, support our staff until furlough reimbursements are received and prepare for the grand re-opening (whenever that may be!). You will be DIRECTLY supporting small, local independent business.
Since taking over The Brunswick 15 years ago from a rough-and-ready sports bar, we've nurtured one the cities best-loved venues through a love for music, an attempt to treat everybody fairly and the desire to have a jolly good time.
We have showcased #grassroots music from the beginning and now host around 50 gigs each month over two venues. We've overcome national recession, noise complaints (some valid, some not-so-much), immense storms, price hikes, buying a Freehold from a PubCo and so many hangovers.....
There's no way that COVID-19 will bring us down.
If we hit our target, and we can prevent the closure of our venue, everything above the amount we need will be donated to the Music Venue Trust GMV Crisis Fund to protect other venues just like ours, right across the country.
