Keep the much loved Squirrel Pub, Maida Hill, open - a valuable asset for our community, more than a hundred years old and counting!
On Tuesday 24 November – next week – a planning committee will meet to decide the future of the Squirrel Pub on the corner of Chippenham Road and Elgin Avenue. The owner of the building is trying to change it into a pharmacy; and has another application in the planning process to change it into flats.
The Squirrel has been a much valued pub for over a century and was trading until it was abruptly closed in 2018. During the last two years, two separate expert reports have shown it is a viable business. Local publicans have shown an interest in running the place as a pub. But the developer has pushed ahead with plans to change its use.
At the committee meeting, the applicant will be arguing that because of COVID-19, the pub is no longer viable. Given the restrictions due to corona virus, the Council may agree.
But these restrictions won't last - experts are saying we'll be able to live more or less normally again by this time next year (if not sooner).
We don’t think it’s right to close a viable and much-loved pub with well over 100 years of history, because of the temporary impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
To successfully challenge this, we need a professional review and report.
We have found a first class chartered surveyor - their reduced report would cost £720 but would be well worth it.
It’s a big ask for the local community, but this has been a David vs Goliath fight since the beginning and we have won every round so far.
Other locals have already donated a total of £500, so we're nearly there for a report that would respond to key points – can you help us reach £720?
If we go further, the surveyors can expand the report; if we get all the way to £2,500 we'll get a full report.
