The project

To publish Sausage Dog Days! Let's raise money for research, and support the 1 in 4  dachshunds that are affected by IVDD.

I've written Sausage Dog Days, an exciting and beautifully illustrated children's picture book, to raise funds and awareness for charities supporting dachshunds who suffer from intervertebral disc disease or IVDD. This disease causes the discs between the vertebrae of the spine to fail and is the most common health problem in dachshunds: around 1 in 4 may be afflicted at some stage in their lives. Sausage dogs are genetically prone to this terrible condition because of their short legs compared to their body size.

While many dogs recover well after weeks of being rested in a cage, others will need a costly operation followed by a long period of rehabilitation as they learn how to walk again. Tragically, some dogs never regain the use of their back legs and will be permanently paralysed; their only chance for a normal life will be to walk with a set of wheels.

This is a terribly distressing condition, for the dog and for their owners.  Symptoms are difficult to spot and your dog may fall prey to the disease without warning. Dachshunds are most likely to suffer from  IVDD when they are young adults – around 4 years old.

Not only is the treatment extremely lengthy and potentially expensive, but learning to live with IVDD is hard.  A dog with IVDD is a life-long commitment, needing patience, care and compassion.

How can you help?

I am asking you to help me publish Sausage Dog Days, by pledging to buy a copy of this brand new picture-book.  After costs, every penny we raise will be split between 2 charities: The Dachshund Breed Council and Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD. These charities fund research and offer support for dogs suffering from IVDD.

Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD grew from Sausage Dog Walks South Wales, a group started by Charlotte Baldwin two years ago, originally to allow dachshund owners to meet up, raise money and increase awareness about IVDD.  So far she and her team of helpers have raised enough money to buy and lend strollers to 160 dogs as well as providing 17 sets of wheels – a fantastic achievement in such a short space of time!

The Dachshund Breed Council undertakes research into the genetic basis of IVDD; evaluates alternative screening techniques; identifies “lifestyle factors” that might predispose dachshunds to IVDD.  They support research projects at UK veterinary schools and offer a back-screening programme for dachshunds before breeding.

I hope that publishing Sausage Dog Days will help to spread awareness about IVDD and alert dachshund owners to the challenges they could face with their beloved pets. This is especially vital, given the growing popularity of this breed. In the back of Sausage Dog Days, there will be a message from Charlotte Baldwin about how Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD can offer help and support, and also a message from Ian Seath, the Chairman of the Dachshund Breed Council, about lifestyle advice for your dachshund and how their research project into IVDD can help.

Who are the creators of Sausage Dog Days?

I am Candy Jones and I wrote this story. I am a former primary school teacher and dachshund obsessive! I have had dachshunds all my life and at the moment I have two: Bonnie and Bella.

Bonnie has twice been a victim of IVDD, and both times needed an operation to help her recover. Luckily we have lifetime insurance cover, because her last operation cost over £6,000. After both operations, which were 2 years apart, Bonnie made a very brave recovery. She is able to walk and run, albeit in a rather wobbly way! However, she has limited use of her back legs and has been left incontinent.

Dealing with this trauma was devastating; we felt very alone, as we had not heard of IVDD before. It was only through the magic of Facebook that we found Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD and the Dachshund Breed Council websites, which helped us so much at such a difficult time.  I can never thank these two charities enough for the support they have so freely given.  We have been loaned a stroller, which enables Bonnie to enjoy her walks just as she used to, especially since she gets very tired.

Herby and Weenie

As a teacher, I know very well how much young children love to read stories about animals and relate to their adventures. When I was teaching, I was aware of how few books for young children tackled the issues of disability.  I hope that Sausage Dog Days will give children the chance to consider and talk about what life would be like using a wheelchair.   In my story, Herby has had IVDD and he now has to use wheels.  But this does not stop him from living life to the full!  Herby is based on an inspirational real-life dachshund called Ernie. His friend Weenie is based on dachshunds everywhere, a dog whose enthusiasm knows no bounds!

Who is illustrating Sausage Dog Days?

I am so lucky to have found Sarah-Leigh Wills, a hugely talented and award-winning illustrator of children’s books.  She has already produced a stunning front cover for Sausage Dog Days and is all set to complete the rest of the artwork, when we reach our funding goal.  You can find examples of her wonderful work by visiting her website Happy Designer https://www.happydesigner.co.uk

What will the money we raise be used for?

We hope to raise at least £3,500  for this project to take wings.  This will cover:

·      Printing costs

·      Illustrator’s fee

·      Postage

·      Crowd-funding fees

Once these costs have been met, all the money we raise will go to Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD and to The Dachshund Breed Council.

Remember that if the project does not reach its target, your pledge will be returned to you.  We only receive the funds you promise if we meet our minimum £3,500 goal.  So please don’t delay: pledge now!

Dachshund lifestyle advice

According to Ian Seath, Chairman of the Dachshund Breed Council, one of the main lifestyle factors
for preventing the onset of IVDD, is to keep your dog ‘fit, not fat. ‘Maintaining a healthy weight for
your dog avoids putting extra pressure on their spine. Keeping dachshunds trim is a complicated
matter when you have those heart-melting and pleading eyes to deal with every time the cheese box
comes out of the fridge! Therefore I am delighted to announce that we have teamed up with Huxley
Hound, who are supporting Sausage Dog Days.

Huxley Hound is a wonderful company that produce low fat, healthy dog treats made from dehydrated organic vegetables. These delicious nutritionally-rich treats have been personally taste-tested and given a big paws up by Bonnie and Bella who love them, especially the sweet potato ones! Take a look at their tasty website! The hero of this family business, Huxley, was afflicted by IVDD a year ago. Charlotte Baldwin loaned them a stroller which was a fantastic support, helping Huxley get out and about with his family. Now Huxley has recovered, his owners Mike and Zena Deane have passed his stroller on to another IVDD dachshund in need.

Priceless Rewards

The majority of rewards on this crowdfunding site involve receiving a copy of the children’s picture book Sausage Dog Days, but please consider the greater reward – that any pledge you make is in fact a donation after costs to two great charities that research into and support dachshunds afflicted by IVDD. The research by the Dachshund Breed Council into this condition is vital if we are to try and prevent such devastating numbers of dachshunds being affected by this terrible disease.

The other charity being supported, Dedicated to dachshunds with IVDD, is all about supporting and transforming the lives of IVDD dachshunds and their families. To give you an idea about what that support means to the families of IVDD sausages let’s hear from them directly. Charlotte Baldwin has shared these messages of thanks from her Facebook site –

FAQs

When will I receive my rewards?

-       You will notice that the expected delivery date is October. This gives us plenty of time for Sarah to finish the illustrations. The last thing we want to do is to keep you waiting for Sausage Dog Days, so we will be sending the book out as soon as the ink is dry!

How much could this project raise?

-       Potentially if all the pledges are filled, we could raise over £25,000 so after costs, 100% of the funds would be split between the charities.

If I do not want a copy of the book, how can I help?

-      You can choose to donate any amount to this project.

-       A £10 pledge will get your dog’s name listed in the back of the book.

If you cannot pledge, please still consider sharing our page and spreading the word about Sausage Dog Days!

Remember that the deadline is 29th June and we only have 13 days to reach our target so please make a huge difference to sausage dogs everywhere and pledge today!

Thank you from me and Herby and Weenie!
