The RSPCA Wimbledon, Wandsworth and Sutton Branch along with the RSPCA Balham and Tooting Branch, have teamed up with Wimbledon Foodbank to deliver pet food to those who need it. Pets are very much part of our families, and some pet owners are extremely worried about continuing to care for their pets through the Covid-19 crisis and beyond, with challenging times lying ahead in the fallout of this devastating situation.
Jon Featherstone, Chair, Wimbledon Foodbank, said: “We are currently providing three days of food packages for up to 150 people a day and we estimate that around 20% of those are pet owners. Ourselves and the RSPCA are keen to help people stay with their pets, who often provide much needed emotional support through this difficult time.”
Ali Hellewell, RSPCA Trustee, Wimbledon, Wandsworth & Sutton District Branch, said: “We know that this is a challenging time for everyone and that some pet owners are extremely worried about continuing to care for their pets through the COVID-19 crisis. We hope to ease some of that pressure by teaming up with the Wimbledon Foodbank to provide pet food for the pet owners who are most in need. Even in the midst of a pandemic we are a nation of animal lovers and the foodbank has seen people in difficult times who have chosen to feed their pets over feeding themselves which shows why this service is so important."
We have recognised this need and kick-started this initiative, which is now taking on a life of its own. It’s likely that this will spread nationwide, providing pet food for the owners who are most in need. Even in the midst of a pandemic we are a nation of animal lovers, and the Foodbank has seen people in difficult times choosing to feed their pets over feeding themselves.
Over the next few weeks, thanks to donations and generosity from Pets@Home, and with other corporate donors currently in discussions, we will increase the availability of urgently needed pet food to those pet owners most in need. The RSPCA Pet Foodbank team is working closely with the Foodbank network, with a view to open in various locations beyond South London. If you are interested in helping in some way please reach out to us or donate here. Additionally, shoppers at local Pets@Home New Malden are able to donate items at a collection point in the store.
All proceeds will be used to purchase pet food to donate to the Foodbank; any funds remaining at the end of the campaign will be split 50/50 between the foodbank and the RSPCA branch.
