About the project

The horrific consequences of this weekend's earthquake have devastated Nepal. Sankhu, a town 20 miles to the east of Kathmandu, where I lived 2004-2005 has been destroyed. Reports suggest 90% of buildings have been damaged and many people are sleeping outside, in tents or in animal shelters. 

Numerous big NGOs are raising funds to provide emergency relief, including shelter, food and sanitation. However, when the big NGOs leave there will be a lot of infrastructural support needed to rebuild communities across the Kathmandu Valley. With no housing insurance in place, this is a daunting and potentially expensive task that will be further hindered by the lengthy times it will inevitably take the government to disburse such money.

Anyone who has ever spent time in Sankhu will tell you what a beautiful place this is and how lovely the community. This weekend's events have devastated Sankhu and left people watching from abroad feeling helpless and distraught. This is our way of helping out friends and people we've come to regard as family.

While bigger NGOs will decide how money is distributed through specific channels and programmes, I am keen for any money raised to go 100% to Sankhu's community, so they can better prioritize how this is spent and distributed.
