The Friends of Arnold Circus urgently need to raise £15,000 to protect this much-loved public green space at the heart of the Boundary Estate in Shoreditch. Neglected for decades, it is now sustained and championed by the Friends of Arnold Circus, a charity which entirely funds the gardening and planting of the Boundary Gardens, centred on the famous bandstand.
The Friends are launching an emergency appeal to help protect and preserve this historic urban oasis. Our fund-raising has been hampered by COVID-19: we need to urgently raise £15,000, to ensure our work maintaining the Boundary Gardens can continue. This is our first ever public appeal, and we would be so grateful if you could donate.
Who we are
Since 2004, the Friends of Arnold Circus have been central to the area’s regeneration. For the Friends, it’s about constant care, with volunteers gardening weekly, tending to the gardens and planting for the future. Our planting is year-round, from hollyhocks in the summer to hellebores in the winter. The Circus gives us 360 degrees of gardens, every few paces offering a fresh view, like a world within a world.
During the pandemic, Arnold Circus has shown its true worth to the local community. It has been an “outside room” for so many households, a place for relaxation and escape, a place for solace, a place for leisure. Without the work of the Friends, the gardens of Arnold Circus would be in jeopardy.
The Friends of Arnold Circus is a charity that entirely relies on donations to keep doing our work, preserving this free space for the local community, and for everyone who enjoys and respects Shoreditch. We are a group of local people who love Arnold Circus, and who care passionately about its future.
Why we need your help
The pandemic has jeopardised our funding. We urgently need to raise £15,000 to cover the next year of our costs.
Planting is one of our major costs. We currently spend around £300 a month on new plants, and this is a bare minimum. We’d love to do more, and we always have new plans. With planting, even the smallest donations count.
- A donation of £10 would pay for 10 English bluebell bulbs, to help create a new bluebell wood in the north-east quarter – we’d need around 200 bulbs to make an impact.
- Similarly, another £200 would help us enrich the new allium planting in the mint bed of the south-west lower quarter.
- £10 would pay for a new fern in our lush woodland areas; £10 could also buy elegant new grasses that give the Gardens so much structure.
The Friends also protect the biodiversity of Arnold Circus. £20 would buy a new birdbox or bat box. £15 pays for a hedgerow plant like Sarcococca, which attracts bees, birds, insects and bats as well as providing a food source in winter. We have ambitions too: it’s our dream to return a drinking fountain to Arnold Circus, in the same spot where one originally stood.
We urgently need tools: new sturdy brooms to sweep up the leaves from our 27 trees; secateurs for our volunteers to cut back growth; a new wheelbarrow to move everything around. £300 should get all we need.
Your donation will also go towards paying for our Head and Assistant Gardener. In addition to planning the development of the gardens, once a week they lead our team of volunteers in planting and carefully nurturing the gardens. A donation of £45 would cover an hour of their invaluable time.
Please consider donating. If you use Arnold Circus as part of your day-to-day life, or just admire the gardens from afar, everything you give will help protect Arnold Circus and the Boundary Gardens, for the next year and for the future.
