The project

Pen and Corrections grew out of an impromptu discussion between two poets, David Breakspear and Ted Sherman

It was during this discussion, in October 2020, that the idea of supporting currently incarcerated prisoners to learn about and write their own haiku was suggested.

Both, David – a former prisoner, a published poet and advocate of the power of creative writing -,  and Ted – a passionate and published haiku poet – recognised that haiku, a short form of unrhymed Japanese poetry, had the potential to engage the interest of prisoners and provide them with the opportunity to express themselves creatively.

A haiku by one of the prisoners that will be in the book.

Two prisons, HMP Ashfield and HMP Eastwood Park, added their support to the project and eventually, nine prisoners were taught about and assisted in writing and sharing their haiku.

The book

The quality of the haiku written by these prisoners is incredible and in order to do these poems justice, the Pen and Corrections poems will be turned into a book.

This beautiful, forty-page book contains haiku from nine prisoners serving sentences. When you pledge support for our campaign you can select a copy of the book as your reward for helping us.

Where does the money you pledge go?

Once we have covered the cost of the production of the book and postage to send the books to our supporters, all funds raised through this campaign will be donated to two charities, Storybook Dads and Children Heard and Seen.

Who is David Breakspear?

In his own words:

"I cleaned out my past, packed up my present and prepared myself for a better future by focusing on #WhatCanBe. Education made the impossible a reality and here I am. A self-confessed former prisoner who has found his element. #livingthedream."

To read more on David's journey through the school to prison pipeline go to journeyofareformedman.net where David blogs about his past, present and future.

Who is producing the book?

We have the help of Ollie Francis, he is an experienced designer and is donating his time to produce the book and set up this Crowdfunder page.

The printing will be done by a printer in the UK who has yet to be selected, who we use will depend on how many books need to be produced.

Thank you for your support!
