I've taken wool from my friend, Luke's farm in Pembrokeshire to a mill in Ceredigion to be processed into a 100% Welsh yarn.
This crowdfunding project will help me raise some of the upfront cost of the wool processing for this very special batch of yarn.
Getting raw wool processed into a usable yarn isn't cheap, but it is a very worthwhile project- I can't wait to offer a fully traceable Welsh yarn, from a lovely blend of 3 different breeds, all coming from the same farm.
The wool
All of the wool for this yarn comes from a farm on the Pembrokeshire coast. Luke has a pedigree flock of Llanwenogs, a small pedigree flock of Blueface Leicesters, and a commercial flock of sheep which includes Welsh Mules.
The wool was shorn off lambs on September 1st, to help them grow over the autumn & winter months ahead, ready for breeding next year. Lambswool is always the best shear off Welsh sheep, as it's not had the harsh Welsh weather battering the fleece.
The batch for this project will be a blend of 3 breeds- Llanwenog (a rare breed, and the finest wool of any pure Welsh breed), Welsh Mule, and Bluefaced Leicester.
The yarn
The finished yarn should be medium-fine quality (due to breed characteristics), and it will be a DK weight. It will be undyed, and I'm hoping it'll be of an ecru colouring; there may be slightly darker colouring here and there, due to the characteristics of the Llanwenog breed.
The finished yarn should be perfect for dyeing, knitting, crochet, and hand-weaving.
Rewards & donations
I'm offering different amounts of yarn as rewards; most of these will be undyed as it comes back from the mill, but I will be hand-dyeing one special batch of a limited edition "Crowdfunder" colourway. The reward prices include postage costs (Royal Mail). The yarn rewards actually work out cheaper than how much I'll eventually be selling the wool for, so they'll be like a type of introductory offer.
Plus, I'm offering some hand-spinning demonstrations as rewards too.
In addition- people are also welcome to just donate to the project too, you don't have to choose a reward if you don't want to. I thank you in advance for your very kind generosity if you choose to do this.
Every pledge I receive is greatly appreciated, and I thank you in advance for helping me make my dreams a reality.
