A short film adaptation of Urielle Klein-Mekongo's award-winning play about survival, silence, and healing after childhood sexual abuse.
I'm Urielle Klein-Mekongo, a writer, performer, filmmaker, and educator from North West London. My work blends storytelling, music, poetry, and performance to explore identity, community, and ask important societal questions. I've worked with production companies including Shiny Button Productions and Fudge Park Productions, and was selected for BBC Writersroom London Voices, where I developed my voice alongside some of the UK's most exciting emerging writers.
Yvette was my debut play. It won the Young Harts Writing Fest Audience Favourite Award, the King's Head Theatre Stella Wilkie Award, and the East 15 Pulse Award in 2017, earned a Stage Debut Award nomination, and was published by Oberon Books. The play connected deeply with audiences through its humour, honesty, and portrayal of surviving childhood sexual abuse. It also helped raise funds for Rape Crisis, demonstrating how powerful storytelling can spark conversation and create real-world impact.
Now, I want to bring Yvette to the screen. Film offers the opportunity to tell this story with a new level of intimacy, reaching audiences far beyond the theatre. My vision is to create a bold, emotionally truthful short film that centres the resilience, humour, and humanity of a young survivor while challenging the silence that often surrounds childhood sexual abuse.
I'm collaborating with an experienced creative team to ensure this story is told with care and authenticity. The money raised will go directly towards paying cast and crew fairly, securing locations, production design, cinematography, sound, editing, music, and festival submissions. Every contribution helps us create a film that is artistically ambitious, socially impactful, and capable of reaching audiences worldwide.
Thank you for helping us bring Yvette to life on screen.
