Blinded by state police, Fabiola Campillai rises in search of justice. Your Eyes, My Voice tells her story of resilience, recovery and hope.
On November 26, 2019, Fabiola Campillai was brutally blinded by police forces during the social uprising in Chile that sought to transform the neoliberal system established by the dictatorship. This documentary follows the life of a 36-year-old Diaguita woman, a mother, worker, resident, and social leader, who tries to rebuild her life after being hit by a bullet in the face, robbing her of her vision, taste, and smell. Slowly, Fabiola rises as a human rights defender and senatorial candidate, transforming her personal trauma into a national fight for justice.
El 26 noviembre de 2019, Fabiola Campillai fue cegada brutalmente por fuerzas policiales durante la revuelta social en Chile que buscaba transformar el sistema neoliberal instaurado desde la dictadura. Este documental sigue la vida de una mujer diaguita de 36 años, madre, trabajadora, pobladora y dirigenta social, que intenta reconstruir su vida luego de recibir un impacto proyectil en su rostro, arrebatándole su visión, el gusto y el olfato. Lentamente, Fabiola se levanta como defensora de derechos humanos y candidata senatorial de la república, transformando su trauma personal en una lucha nacional por justicia.
In October 2019, Chile exploded. Millions of people, tired of the political system, corruption, and socioeconomic inequality, filled the streets across the country demanding dignity: fair pensions, better healthcare, and quality education in the face of an economic model established by the "Chicago Boys" during the civil-military dictatorship.
En Octubre de 2019 Chile estalló. Millones de personas cansadas del sistema político, la corrupción y la desigualdad socioeconómica llenaron las calles de todo el país exigiendo dignidad: pensiones justas, mejor atención médica y educación de calidad ante un modelo económico instaurado por los “Chicago Boys” en plena dictadura cívico-militar.
The government of then-President Sebastián Piñera Echeñique ordered police and military forces to take to the streets to suppress the social uprising. It was in this context that Fabiola Campillai left her home in San Bernardo, a suburb of the capital, heading to the Carozzi food factory to work her shift. However, she never made it, as she tried to cross the border and was hit directly in the face by a tear gas canister fired by then-Carabineros Captain Patricio Maturana Ojeda. The projectile fractured her skull, mutilated both eyes, took away her sense of smell and taste, and kept her on the brink of death for several days.
El gobierno de turno del entonces presidente Sebastian Piñera Echeñique, ordenó a las fuerzas policiales y militares que salieran a las calles para reprimir el levantamiento social. Es en este contexto, que Fabiola Campillai salió desde su casa en San Bernardo, barrio periférico de la Capital rumbo a la fábrica de alimentos Carozzi para cumplir con su turno laboral. Sin embargo, nunca alcanzó a llegar, pues al intentar cruzar fue impactada directamente en el rostro por una bomba lacrimógena, disparada por el entonces Capitán de Carabineros, Patricio Maturana Ojeda. El proyectil fracturó su cráneo, mutiló ambos ojos, le quitó el olfato y gusto, y la mantuvo al borde de la muerte durante varios días.

Her life could have ended there: in darkness and silence. But it didn't.
Su vida podría haber terminado allí: en la oscuridad y en silencio. Pero no fue así.
She wanted to live to continue supporting the lives of her three children and to obtain justice for the horrific crime that changed her life and that of hundreds of others.
Ella quería vivir para seguir acompañando la vida de sus 3 hijos y para tener justicia ante el horrible crimen que cambió su vida y la de otras centenares de personas.
After exhaustive surgeries to stop the cerebrospinal fluid leak, Fabiola was left with a scar on her skull that runs horizontally from one ear to the other. Her skull and face were reconstructed with titanium, and two glass prosthetic eyes are now placed in the eye sockets where her brown eyes were located, filling and aesthetically resembling the eyes that were once stolen.
Tras exhaustivas cirugías para frenar la filtración del líquido cefalorraquídeo, Fabiola quedó con una cicatriz en el cráneo que le recorre, desde una oreja a otra en forma horizontal. Su cráneo y rostro fue reconstruido con titanio y en sus cuencas oculares en las que estaban sus ojos café, hoy se sobreponen dos prótesis oculares de cristal para llenar y asemejar estéticamente lo que algún día fueron los ojos que le arrebataron.
During her recovery, Fabiola had to learn to navigate a new world: one of visual darkness. Together with her husband Marco and a cane in hand, she walked the same streets where the police had tried to silence her voice. With months of rehabilitation, her fight for justice and her status as a symbol of resilience grew stronger.
Durante su recuperación, Fabiola debía aprender a desenvolverse en un mundo nuevo, el de la oscuridad visual. Junto con su esposo Marco y un bastón en la mano, recorrió las mismas calles donde la policía había intentado silenciar su voz. Con los meses de rehabilitación, su lucha por la justicia y su figura como símbolo de resiliencia se hicieron más fuertes.
But her case was not unique. More than 450 people were mutilated or suffered ocular trauma from gunshot wounds to one eye during the protests: students, workers, and bystanders, revealing a deliberate and systematic pattern of state violence. Justice seemed impossible and distant. The judicial system stalled, many cases went uninvestigated, evidence was withheld, state agents agreed to remain silent and escaped blame. Piñera's complicit government turned a blind eye to these human rights violations, maintaining the impunity that has historically prevailed in Chile.
Pero su caso no era el único. Más de 450 personas resultaron mutiladas/os o con trauma ocular por disparos en uno de sus ojos durante las protestas: estudiantes, trabajadores, transeúntes, dando cuenta de un patrón deliberado y sistemático de violencia estatal. La justicia parecía imposible y lejana. El sistema judicial se estancó, muchos casos no se investigaron, se ocultaron pruebas, los agentes del Estado pactaron silencio y quedaron libres de culpa, el gobierno cómplice de Piñera miró hacia otro lado ante estas violaciones a los derechos humanos, sosteniendo la impunidad que históricamente ha imperado en Chile.
From this place of profound injustice, Fabiola did the unthinkable: she decided to run for parliamentarian in the Senate of the Republic to fight for justice in her case and in the cases of other victims and survivors.
Desde este lugar de profunda injusticia es que Fabiola hizo lo impensable: decidir postularse como parlamentaria del Senado de la República para luchar desde ahí por justicia en su caso y en el de más víctimas y sobrevivientes.
What began as a personal struggle for justice became a national and international campaign to the Chilean parliament, uniting citizens, social movements, survivors of state violence, and human rights defenders. She faced digital smear campaigns, mockery and criticism, fake news, death threats, and legal battles; yet, step by step, she helped build a large movement of support against all odds.
Lo que comenzó como una lucha personal por la justicia se convirtió en una campaña nacional e internacional hacia el parlamento chileno, uniendo a ciudadanos, movimientos sociales, sobrevivientes de la violencia estatal y defensores de derechos humanos. Enfrentó campañas digitales de desprestigio, burlas y cuestionamientos, noticias falsas, amenazas de muerte y batallas judiciales; sin embargo, paso a paso, ayudó a construir un gran movimiento en apoyo contra todo pronóstico.

The documentary film "YOUR EYES, MY VOICE" observes Fabiola from the intimate moments of her rehabilitation and adaptation to blindness, her search for justice in the trial against the Captain of the Carabineros, to the monitoring of political meetings: from the anguish of legal uncertainties to her victory in entering the National Congress of the Republic of Chile. With exceptional access to her inner circle, we witness the creation of a political force unparalleled in recent Chilean history.
La película documental “TUS OJOS, MI VOZ” observa a Fabiola desde los momentos íntimos de su rehabilitación y adaptación a la ceguera, la búsqueda de justicia en el juicio contra el Capitán de Carabineros, hasta el seguimiento a reuniones políticas: desde la angustia de las incertidumbres legales hasta la victoria para ingresar al Congreso Nacional de la República de Chile. Con un acceso excepcional a su círculo íntimo, presenciamos la creación de una fuerza política sin igual en la historia reciente de Chile.
Combining observational footage and archival material, the film asks: what does justice look like when your sight has been stolen? How far can a voice that speaks for hundreds of people already silenced by fear and hopelessness go? This isn't just Fabiola's story. It's a story about all of us: about the power of resilience, even when there are powers that try to repress and silence you.
Combinando seguimiento, imágenes de vérité, material de archivo y secuencias visuales poéticas, la película pregunta: ¿cómo se ve la justicia cuando te han robado la vista? ¿Hasta dónde puede llegar una voz que habla por cientos de personas ya silenciadas por el miedo y la desesperanza? Esta no es solo la historia de Fabiola. Es una historia sobre tod@s nosotr@s: sobre el poder de resiliencia, incluso cuando hay poderes que te intentan reprimir y silenciar.
HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT US?
We need your financial support to bring the project to the finish line. It has been a long road to get here, more than four years of self-financing by its directors and an entire team that has trusted in the project. No one has received a fee; on the contrary, we have made the greatest efforts to cover every technical need. Fabiola's courage and determination have been a constant source of inspiration, reminding us why we started and why we must finish. This could be the most important story we'll ever tell: urgent, emotional, and deeply human.
The goal of this campaign won't fully cover all post-production costs, but it will allow us to complete the score, animation, graphic design, and create versions with descriptive subtitles and audio description for greater inclusivity for the hearing and/or visually impaired community. We've already secured part of the necessary budget for the film, but we need to supplement it to finish it. If we manage to exceed our goal, even better: it means we'll be able to reach a wider audience through distribution and screenings in Europe and Latin America.

Ha sido un largo camino para llegar hasta aquí, más de 4 años de la autogestión de sus directores y de todo un equipo humano que ha confiado en el proyecto, pues nadie ha recibido honorario alguno, al contrario, con el mayor de los esfuerzos a costeado cada necesidad técnica. Pues la valentía y la determinación de Fabiola han sido un motor constante de inspiración, recordándonos por qué empezamos y por qué debemos terminar. Esta podría ser la historia más importante que jamás contemos: urgente, emotiva y profundamente humana.
La meta de esta campaña no cubrirá por completo todos los costos de postproducción, pero sí nos permitiría realizar la musicalización, animación, diseño gráfico y generar versiones con subtitulaje descriptivo y audio descripción para mayor inclusividad a la comunidad con discapacidad auditiva y/o visual. Ya hemos asegurado parte del presupuesto necesario para la película, pero necesitamos complementar para finalizarla. Si logramos superar nuestro objetivo, aún mejor: significa que podremos llegar a mayor público a través de la distribución y muestras por Europa y Latinoamérica.
