Young Quines have been selected to perform at the National Festival of Youth Theatre! They are fundraising for their trip.
Young Quines, a youth theatre based in Kirkcaldy, are delighted to have been selected to perform their new show Hexenhammer at the National Festival of Youth Theatre at Eden Court Theatre in Inverness this July.
The Young Quines are fundraising £2,000, to help cover transport and camping costs. Getting a full set, props, costumes and all the participants to Inverness is no mean feat, and as this is our first time going camping together there is a lot we need to make this happen!
Anything you can give will help.
What exactly is Young Quines?
Young Quines, is a programme of artistic, personal and social development for young women and non-binary people in Fife. Young Quines is designed to empower young people, through theatre, to develop confidence, agency and connection. They work together to make theatre about what is most important to them, working with professional theatre practitioners to develop their skills to perform their work for their local communities.
It is free to attend, with food, travel and access support for those who need it.
Why are we going to Inverness?
Performing at the Festival is a great opportunity for the participants to meet other like-minded young people, see lots of theatre and share their work nationally. Being selected for the Festival is a huge honour, and to take their show to Eden Court is a brilliant experience.
Additionally, many of our participants have not been away from home before and this is a fantastic opportunity for them to visit the beautiful Scottish Highlands in a safe and supported environment. This national festival offers Young Quines, as Scotland’s only feminist youth theatre, an unparalleled opportunity to share our unique practice and approach with other young people and practitioners. National Festival of Youth Theatre is a fantastic celebration of young people, offering them the opportunity to develop as artists, leaders, audience members and creative thinkers.
What is the show?

Hexenhammer explores medieval and modern sexism through Scotland’s long history of witch-hunting. From the seventeenth century rumour mill to twenty first century computer games, the misogyny of ‘witch-hunts’ is embedded deep in society. In response, the Young Quines have created Hexenhammer, a fierce and joyful critique of daily sexism, a tribute to the accused ‘witches’ of the past and a celebration of the witches of the present.
Devised by the young people in collaboration with Creative Engagement Associates Katrine Turner and Rachael Keiller, Hexenhammer is Young Quines first original production.
What are we doing to fundraise?
On Saturday 20 June, the Young Quines are going to be undertaking a 5KM witchy fundraising walk around the new Wemyss Cats of Kirkcaldy Trail to raise funds to support their trip. You can follow the Young Quines on the route via our instagram feed: https://www.instagram.com/stellarquines/
If you can donate to support the Young Quines trip to the National Festival of Youth Theatre, the team would be very grateful.
