You send me on a residency, I make art for you!

Aim

I've been invited onto an AMAZING residency, but it isn't funded and the fees are more than I can handle. Can you buy art to help me out?

I'm completely overwhelmed by essentially meeting my goal in ONE DAY. 🥇 This means I CAN GO TO ORKNEY! Thank you, supporters; friends, family, colleagues, acquaintances, followers and mystery anonymous people! You've made me so happy, grateful and best of all, given me the confidence to believe I am worth this. 💪 I now have the fees for the residency and I can afford travel there and back. HOORAY! 

In case anyone would still like to support me, I can't add an official stretch goal here. However, if you still pledge and the total exceeds the original goal set, it means I can then afford some extra things that would make this even better. I could then afford accommodation on the journey, I won't be out of pocket (because I'm losing a week of work) and it will go towards the materials and development for all your rewards! It may even allow me to develop more work and make space for writing and drawing when I return. 📝

What is this crowdfunder for? 

I have been selected to go on a residency in Orkney 🌊and I'm raising funds so I can get there! 🚢 

Who I am
Hiya! I am Rosie, a friendly freelance illustrator (and professional enthusiast) based in Glasgow. I have been illustrating for about 13 years; working with clients on their projects, on workshops and live illustration events, creating retail lines for shops and for places like University of Glasgow. I've also illustrated some childrens books, one of which won the Scottish Language Awards 'Scots Bairnies Book o the Year' in 2022’.

I like laughing, eating, going to Scottish islands, being in nature, ancient sites, collecting beach and forest treasures (shells, sticks and leaves to everyone else), wild swimming, drawing, writing, having brilliant friends and hanging out with my four year old and my husband. This year I have been feeling a keen need for change generally, but also desire for a career overhaul, or to pivot in a new direction. I've been working part time for a local community centre and feel I'm doing good things there. It’s already a different direction, much more about making connections and being with other people. This general need for change has been coming for a while. It’s leading to me feeling desperate to make my own work; I want to experiment, learn, develop and perhaps even write my own stories.

So what about this residency?
I have been offered a place on a super exciting residency on Orkney next month! Yessss! BUT I only just found out, it has steep fees and there's not enough time to apply for funding. Nooooo! And - not to brag - but I don't have that kind of money on hand right now (thanks to my work in the creative industries). However, I do feel in my bones that this residency will be pivotal for me.

In essence, it's a writing residency exploring a sense of place in the natural and neolithic landscapes of Orkney. Sounds dreamy. So, let's go back to my interests; Scottish Island - check, ancient sites - check, nature - check, creative expression - check. It IS dreamy. It's run by wonderful people who have been kind, encouraging and supportive every step of the way, so my last hurdle is finding some financial support to get me there.

Make it worth my while?
Sure I will! I want to give something back to everyone who supports me because I can't tell you how happy I am to have the chance to go. I’ve thought up some rewards or perks for the different levels of support. It makes sense for me to create NEW WORK based on my experiences away and to share that with you! So to be clear, you won’t be receiving your support rewards until at least October - but then you get to look forward to a brilliant surprise, knowing you helped me get there. Please specify what reward(s) you would like in your comments - if it's not obvious!

Here’s my pitch (everything comes by 2nd class post later in the year):

£5 - Badge
I will hand draw a badge and each one will be a different ink drawing. Happy to take requests (within reason)!

£15 - Mini Print
Approximately A5 size print, probably a linocut that I will make just for this, based on my travels and experiences on Orkney. Content unknown!  

£30 - Print
Approximately A4 size print, probably a linocut that I will make just for this, based on my travels and experiences on Orkney. Content also unknown!

£50 - Badge and 2 x Print Bundle
All of the first three rewards in one nice package. Surprise treats galore!

£150 - Original drawing (approx. A4)
I will do a drawing for you in ink. Send me a photo or description and I’ll draw you / your house / your family / a significant place / you and your pals (again, within reason)!

£200 - Massive everything bundle 
Feels wild to even put this in as a pledge, but hey, why not?! I will do a drawing for you, send you the print, mini print and a bespoke badge. I'll probably throw in a little extra something for laughs, just because this figure is so high.
