Supporting York residents facing hardship.
The Trust (previously known as The Micklegate, York Charitable Trust) began in 1566 when Dame Isabel Ward, the last Prioress of Clementhorpe Nunnery, gifted Jacob’s Well on Trinity Lane to the Trustees to provide relief for the poor on All Souls’ Day each year.
Over the years, we have been fortunate to receive donations and legacies from business people and members of churches across York. Businesses in York city centre continue to support us.
Today, the Trust uses its funds to benefit people who live in the city of York, who are facing hardship or distress.
While most of our funds go to individuals in need, we have supported a wide variety of groups and organisations who help people in the city of York.
Since the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic and lockdown measures, requests for support have increased by 134%. Our existing funds only go so far and we are now looking and raising additional money to help all who apply.
