This project will include research, workshops, devising and performing new work, and a final showcase at the University of Bath.
YAMA Dance Company is the premiere company for older dancers in the Bath & NE Somerset area. It is a contemporary dance company that was established in 2016 by Bath Dance. It was set up for anyone ‘over 60 ’ who loves to dance to devise original work, create new social connections, and share work with wider audiences through performance. Now an independent company, YAMA currently has 21 dancers between the ages of 60-75, and is open to all who wish to join a performance company. We are led by Artistic Director, Anna Heighway, and managed by our volunteer members.
What we want to do:
This year we are devising three exciting new intergenerational pieces working with our Artistic Director and 3 companies whose practice is new to us: Third Stage Dance Company, Allouaqui, and Be U Dance Company. We would like to be able to showcase these new pieces in an evening of dance at the The Edge Theatre, University of Bath, in July 2020. and make a short film documenting the new work. This performance event will be Yama's first ever solo showcase, which is crucial to building our reputation as a high quality dance company. The event will also kickstart our next exciting project: developing a successful programme of community outreach workshops based on our new repertoire.'
To achieve our aims we need help to raise funds for venue hire, tech support, costumes, professional fees, and rehearsal space for the showcase event.
Yama dancers say:
• Yama is one of the most inspirational things I’ve ever been a part of. Who’d have thought that at the age of 70 I’d be working with choreographers, dancing on a stage, and encouraging other people, both young and old, to express themselves through movement and have the time of their lives
• Through devising performances, I have had to reach deep into personal experience and memory, which has been richly rewarding.
We will be so excited to be able to achieve our project aims thanks to your generous support!
