We need around £20k to turn an unloved patch of land at Littlecoates Primary Academy into a community Wildlife Reserve & Garden

by Carole Foster in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, United Kingdom

We're still collecting donations

On the 10th August 2023 we'd raised £40 with 2 supporters in 48 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.

What Are We Doing?

Littlecoates Primary Academy is committed to bringing our local community together through fun activities and creative learning.

We are crowdfunding to turn an unloved patch of land situated behind Littlecoates Primary Academy, into a vibrant, accessible, and safe new public space for the community and our students to access.

The Wildlife Reserve / Community Garden will be specifically designed to create an interesting diversity of wildlife habitats and wildlife features carefully interlinked to create a harmonious, self-sustaining ecosystem that offers the community a unique, natural learning and well-being experience.

A natural haven for wildlife and community members, Littlecoates Primary Academy Wildlife Reserve / Community Garden offers participants opportunities for peaceful, relaxed study and therapeutic interaction with nature.

It provides opportunities for users to participate fully in observing wildlife and learning about the natural world within an adventurous, fun and stress-free natural environment.

Within the Wildlife Reserve an interesting variety of carefully designed landscape features and wildlife habitats such as the Woodland, Wildflower Meadow areas, Hazel Coppice, Nuttery and Wildlife Pond area are interlinked and accessed by meandering mown grass pathways. Several different seating areas such as Hazel Grove and the Wildlife Pond Hide provide natural spaces where groups can gather and observe wildlife.

Outer Space Growing Garden offers a tranquil well-being and outdoor learning area surrounded by raised beds filled with flowers, salads and vegetables grown by the community which will attract butterflies and much beneficial insect life.

Native species of trees, shrubs and perennials provide a varied and colourful planting scheme designed to attract and support a wide diversity of wildlife species throughout the year.

In future years, over time the dynamic community of interacting plants and animals will increase in diversity, further enhancing the nature conservation interest of the Wildlife Reserve and improving the aesthetic value of the area.

How Will We Achieve It?

The funds raised will enable us to securely fence the perimeter. We will landscape the area, planting colourful and pollinating plants, as well as creating the carefully designed landscape features such as the wildlife pond, wildflower meadow areas, Nuttery and Coppice.

We will collaborate with the local community who have helped design the project and will now support making our vision a reality.  We will also be working alongside Voluntary Action North East Lincolnshire , The Friends of Littlecoates and The Green Influencers  on the landscaping and maintenance of the garden, alongside providing introductory sessions on horticulture, providing pathways into further training and employment.

What's Next?

Once up and running, The Friends of Littlecoates & Voluntary Action North East Lincolnshire will host an exciting range of free and engaging activities in the Wildlife Reserve & Community Garden, from talks, to introductions to horticulture and creative making workshops.

We are so excited to create a new public space for the community in Littlecoates, and have already secured a portion of what we need to make this dream a reality.

The money raised via this Crowdfunder will go directly towards creating a Wildlife Pond & Hide to provide natural spaces where community members can gather and observe wildlife.
