Every donation helps Clare and Gaetan navigate this terrible diagnosis and feel loved along the way.
In April this year, Xavier, a beautiful two-year-old full of fun and mischief, received a devastating diagnosis - he had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, a rare type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow as well as his ability to fight off infection.
Xavier is an incredibly brave little boy, but the cancer and the treatment are already taking their toll. He’s weak, exhausted and suffers with pain that is so severe that he is unable to walk. This disease has stolen the normal childhood joys he should be experiencing, and it’s heartbreaking to witness this happy, lovely little boy endure so much.
There is a 90 per cent chance that Xavier will eventually reach full remission, but he and his parents face a long, hard road. Chemotherapy and other targeted treatments are likely to continue for up to three years, and Xavier will need full time care for that period.
Xavier’s parents, Clare and Gaetan, have found themselves thrown into a world of frequent hospital visits, of having to be up multiple times throughout the night, of ongoing pain and suffering, of surgical procedures, daily complicated caregiving responsibilities, blood transfusions, and doctor appointments.
There's a heavy financial impact too, with loss of income and increased costs.
We are therefore fundraising to help with the following:
And, as this is only the beginning of the journey and we don’t fully know all the added expenses yet (each chemo stage will bring new challenges), we want to help them build an emergency fund so that they can face an uncertain future without financial fear adding to this burden. This is particularly important as they are both self-employed with no access to sick pay through their work.
Clare and Gaetan want Xavier to have one of them with him, while he goes though all this - but they also both need to keep working in order to have both income streams for their mortgage renewal. If they can work from home when the opportunity arrises, that will be of huge help but there is currently no place to work in their small home, so they would like to build a separate infection controlled, quiet space for carers and this will act as a safe space for Xavier, away from the busy road where he can be looked after and will mean there is space to have a studio / office in the house.
We want to help them make the infection control space a reality.
