Aim

We are setting up a community supported beehive project in Worthing training up volunteer beekeepers and running pollination master classes.

We are currently setting up a community supported beehive project in Worthing, and have already secured two rooftop sites where we will place hives over the coming months. We will involve local schools and businesses to find out more about beekeeping, pollination and honey. We are also looking to involve interested volunteers from the surrounding areas to be introduced to beekeeping in order to support us with this project and eventually keep their own bees.

We will build the first hives from scratch and paint each of them individually to give our new bees a home. Our resident beekeeper Tony will initially look after them once we place them in June 2018, while we start our training programme for novice beekeepers and set up a collaborative honey trading platform for local beekeeping enthusiasts. We expect to have our first honey harvest in autumn 2019 once the bees are established and the hives have got to full size.

With more bees in our town there is a need to increase the amount of food there is available for them, also taking into account that honeybees directly compete for food with our wild bees such as bumblebees and solitary bees.  Together with local partners we will encourage  wildflower and bee friendly planting schemes across our town to ensure that we have more food available for all pollinators. We are currently planning to get a series of events set up this Spring / Summer to which we can invite people from the local neighbourhoods to learn more about bee friendly plants, making seed bombs and turning their gardens into wildlife friendly environments.

This is a project for participants of all ages, and will make Worthing one of the most bee friendly towns in West Sussex. Get involved and support us!
