The Truggery is one of the last remaining workshops to make traditional Sussex Trugs in Herstmoncuex. Trugs have been made in our workshop since 1899, and the building is believed to be even older than that.
Our workshop roof is very old, and has been in need of replacement for the last 5~10 years. However, due to lack of funds, we have been making do with patching it occasionally.
The recent round of strong wind and rain, however, has resulted in more damage and it is now in urgent need of replacement. Significant water has been leaking into the machine room, and an inspection to the roof has shown a large number of tiles are missing. There is only so much that expanding foam can keep the inevitable at bay!
In September we moved our shop area to the workshop, following the sale of the family house. Now that all our stock is stored in the workshop building it is even more important to keep everything dry.
We have received a number of quotations for the repair and are targeting to start the repair in the new year, with improved weather. It is expected to cost between £10,000 ~ £15,000, depending on how many of the underlying beams need to be replaced.
We are hoping to raise some of this money to help go towards the roof repair, to keep the business going.
Thank you for your support, from the team at The Truggery.
