Wooler Bowling Club by Wooler Water has a 6 rink lawn bowling green in beautiful condition, maintained entirely by our members.
Our Club was established in 1923 after Lord Tankerville gifted land in perpetuity to the then Trustees “for the benefit and recreation of the Comrades of the Great War”. The Club has been providing recreational bowling for the local community of Wooler and its environs since that date. In 1958 land was purchased from the British Transport Commission, which enabled the bowling green to be extended to six rinks and the enlarged green was officially opened in May 1963.
Our club attracts bowlers from all over Northumberland and beyond to play in our open pairs and triples tournaments together with visiting teams and individual visitors from across England and Scotland. We hold regular friendly games, home and away, with other clubs, numerous internal competitions and of course regular social bowling sessions for our members. In 2024 our team won the North Northumberland rinks league.
The Club is always delighted to welcome new members, be they experienced bowlers or beginners. Equally, if on holiday in or around Wooler or local residents, visitors are most welcome to come along. The green and clubhouse are accessible to disabled persons.
Our bowling club became a registered charity in 2020 as Wooler Bowling & Sports Club and continues to thrive and makes its clubhouse available for use by local Community Groups.
Our Club is affiliated to Bowls England and Bowls Northumberland
The insulated suspended ceiling will improve our energy efficiency by reducing heat loss from the main hall and make the hall more comfortable to use through the winter months by Club members and the local community. We decided it was essential for the work to be completed before the onset of winter to enable us to start using the hall again and derive the benefits of improved energy efficiency as soon as possible. This project constitutes the initial work for our long term plans to replace the deteriorating oldest section of the clubhouse built in the early 1920s for which planning permission has been obtained.
Why are we crowdfunding?
We are Crowdfunding to cover the cost of the insulated suspended ceiling which has initially been paid for from limited club funds earmarked for our long term plans to replace the deteriorating oldest section of the clubhouse.
We have been offered £2,500 towards this project by Sport England providing we can raise an equivalent amount via Crowdfunding.
Our Club's annual income is derived mainly from member's subscriptions and fundraising activities which only provides sufficient income for the day to day expenditure involved in the running of our Club.
How we’ll spend the money raised
The money raised will allow us to replace the funds expended on installing the insulated suspended ceiling which were earmarked for our long term plans to replace the deteriorating oldest section of the clubhouse.
Community impact
We make our Club available to the local community of Wooler and its environs but its construction, particularly in the main hall with its pitched roof, make it very expensive to heat. The suspended ceiling with insulation above will reduce heat loss from the main hall and will make the hall more comfortable to use through the winter months by members and the local community. If we can increase the use of the hall by the local community it will provide additional income to the Club and allow us to make further improvements to our building and its facilities.
We play carpet bowls and table tennis in the main hall during the winter months when there is no outdoor bowling. This allows members to retain social contact during the winter and engage in friendly sporting activity. Visitors are also welcome to join us and our activities are advertised locally.
How you can play your part
There are four simple ways to help us reach our £2,500 target and qualify for equivalent matched funding from Sport England

2. Spread the word. Share our project on your social media pages and tell the world to get behind us! The more people we reach, the more support we will get.
3. Offer rewards. Get involved if you are a local business by donating things we can offer to our supporters. We will give you a shout out!
4. Fundraise for us. If you want to run your own fundraiser – maybe a sponsored activity or similar – use the 'contact project' button at the top of our page to let us know. Setting up your own page only takes a few minutes and you won’t need any bank details. Just a fun idea!
