Aim

A team of volunteers started building our kiln in July and have made amazing progress, but we still need special shelves, chimney and grate.

We are giving ourselves just 14 days to reach our target, so that we can buy the materials, and get the kiln up and running before Christmas!

We are very fortunate to have potter, Yoni, staying at the woods for the coming year, to establish a pottery in the old workshop. He will be making all manner of ceramics himself, as well as opening the studio for the wider community  of all ages to learn alongside him.

A kiln is an essential part of being able to not only make but complete ceramic projects. Yoni and architect Tom Joseph (a previous volunteer here at the wood) designed the kiln and have been building it along with a team of volunteers since our Working with Wood Week in July 2022.

Wilderness Wood have funded the project so far, but the budget has now been used up. A lot of time has been invested to make the kiln, we now need another £800 to push it over the line.

This money will be used to pay for a custom made grate and shelves, as well as some more bricks to finish the chimney.

We have chosen a traditional wood-fired kiln, which can be fired using our own home-grown coppiced chestnut (a sustainable source), and Yoni and the team will be learning how to create the best firing techniques and new pottery.

Wilderness Wood is a 60 acre working woodland and has a membership of over 200 families who contribute to the running of the woods and form a vibrant community. We have volunteers of all ages who help with various cultural and environmental projects throughout the year: allowing them to connect with each other and get outside, learning about the natural world and contributing to projects such as the kiln build, and seasonal celebrations.
