Raising funds to site a Heritage Plaque on the 17th century Wolfhunt House to celebrate our rich local history.
The history of Wolfhunt House in Mansfield Woodhouse dates back to the 13th Century.
The name 'Wolfhunt House' was given to the property as it housed local hunters. Their job was to search out wolves and sound their horns to alert villagers. Wolf hunters would attempt to drive away wolves or, if necessary, lay traps to catch the wolves before slaying them armed only with a bill hook and spear.
Earliest history states that in about 1250 Alan de Lorimer held a bovate of land at Mansfield Woodhouse and became the first Wolf Hunter. Later, Sir Robert Plumpton inherited the house, land and job in 1432. The house as we see it today dates from the 18th century with alterations made in the 19th century.
This age old property still stands on the High Street at Mansfield Woodhouse and is testament to what was an ancient occupation.
