This is a cause very close to our hearts, last month Wizard Works Co-Founder, Ve, was caught in the middle of the devastating Cyclone Gabrielle while visiting New Zealand. Her hometown of Eskdale was one of the hardest places hit.
Tragically for Ve, the cyclone hit exactly one month after the sudden death of her father. His home (below) being so close to the Esk River, is now all but destroyed along with so many special memories, buried in the silt.
Just over a month after the cyclone, and there is still a long, long road to recovery. Homes and livelihoods have been destroyed, families are displaced, and communities still cut off.
Ve's story:
"When I woke at 2am the water was already ankle deep in my room. Luckily the house I was staying in had a second floor above the garage we could get to, from there the rain and wind howled around us and we watched the water rise and rise, as it got lighter, we could see it was a raging torrent that spanned the whole valley.
Sheds and beds and concrete water tanks rolled past. As the water crept up to the second floor, we made plans to climb onto the roof, but luckily for us it never came to that. Eventually the rain eased, the water stopped rising and in the morning, I was rescued.
I cried as I was jet boated to safety, through the vineyards I worked in as a teenager, the valley Dad spent his whole life cultivating, completely engulfed by the little river we grew up playing in."
On a mission is to connect people that care with causes that matter, to strengthen our local community, forever.
Hawke’s Bay Foundation funds a wide range of innovative community projects – large and small – in areas such as community connectedness, social development, health, children and youth issues, older adults, arts and culture and the natural environment.
They have set up a special ‘HB Cyclone Relief Fund’ to funnel donations direct to overwhelmed welfare agencies on the ground, that need it most. A critical fund set up specifically to help those in Hawke's Bay worst affected by the disaster.
Thank you for your support :)
