In a nutshell ………………………..

Withingon Walls is community project that aims to brighten up Withington village and cultivate a sense of pride and identity with a programme of public art works.

Shop shutters and gable end walls will be the canvas for amazing murals and street art that will help rejuvenate Withington

The Project………………………..

The aim is the raise £5,000 to initiate a programme of public art works to unloved and unsightly walls and shop shutters in and around the Village.

This will build on the trial piece to the side of the Moon curry house (thanks to our friends at Moon for allowing this).  As a spin off to the M20 Festival - which paid homage to Withington-born Factory Records  - we commissioned a mural of Factory’s enigmatic art director and graphic designer, Peter Saville.

The piece was done by ex Withington resident @Aksep19 , who is undoubtedly one of the best street artists in the UK if not the world.

The Peter Saville mural has been really well received by the community and we like to think this is a great example of the quality of artwork that could be achieved at loads of other sites around Withington Village.

The artwork will be carefully curated and primarily done by local Mancunian artists who are renowned for delivering quality street art.

The work will also replace the graffiti and tags that have been sprayed on shop shutters

So who’s behind it ?

The Withington Village Regeneration Partnership is a public/private/community collaboration set up in 2017 with a vision to progress the regeneration and environmental improvement of Withington Village.

It consists of key stakeholders who have an interest in Withington Village, including representatives of Manchester City Council, Southway Housing Association, The Christie, Withington Baths, Withington Civic Society and importantly local traders and property owners.

Achievements in our short life time include:

  • winning funding for a pocket park project in the Village,
  • commissioning a new Development Plan to guide and encourage the future development of the Village
  • the first piece of artwork in this project
  • facilitating exciting pop up projects such as the M20 Festival, the Curious Collection markets & the Lock Inn craft ale pop up pub nights

We are also in the process of looking at other exciting ideas for the Village including creating a community market, the creation of a new public space outside the Library as well as bidding for the Governments Future High Street Fund which if successful would transform the Village

As part of this journey we have worked closely with Manchester Metropolitan University's Institute of Place Management who are the UK’s foremost authority in regeneration/place management. Their advice was to set up a traders association to help promote the Village, so we have – We Are Withington.

We Are Withington is a collection of traders and service providers in the Village including Wilderness Records, A Curious Collection, The Lock Inn, Solomons, Burton Road Brewery, Withington Baths and The Christie.

To get the project underway we’re inviting members of the public / businesses to donate to our Withington Walls crowdfunder.

Every penny counts and every penny goes towards delivering the project.

The crowdfunder was launched as part of the Withington By Night event of Friday 4th October when Village businesses stayed opened late and put on events and entertainment and there was a bit of street art by Hammo

With your support we could really help push the improvement and regeneration of Withington Village by creating a fantastic outdoor gallery of great street art.

Withington Walls is not just about public art though  - we believe it will be a catalyst to further empower and encourage our community to come together and take a real pride in our area and build on some of the brilliant independent businesses and community initiatives already happening in Withington.

Please give generously………………………thank you.
