The Wincanton Museum and History Society was founded in 1987. We run a small, but fascinating, museum and hold monthly talks on local and national history. In 2023 we staged the first Wincanton History Day and it was a huge success. On April 5th we will be taking over the town for our third event. History Day is a town-wide event celebrating history, in its broadest sense, through a host of family-oriented attractions.
This year the theme is "The Horse- In Work, Sport and Leisure". There will be a horse parade with costumed riders, a hobbyhorse "Grand National" for children, with a prize for the best silks and best turned-out horse, metal detecting, a vintage transport parade, live music, good food, an Antiques Roadshow-style event, Victorian schoolroom re-enactment for children to take part in and much, much more.
The event brings together the local schools, the churches, local businesses and all those who recognise the historical significance of Wincanton, and want to celebrate it!
It has become the largest single attraction in the Wincanton calendar and we aim to make it a regular annual event for years to come. The society is run entirely by volunteers who give up their free time. Similarly, History Day could not be the success it is without a team of fantastic volunteers throughout the town. Unfortunately, some things can only be achieved with old-fashioned money - like printing, venue hire and professional services. If you feel you could help this great community project with a donation - £1 or £100, it all adds up! - then please donate today.
