The RSPCA Pet Food Bank Project
With 17.4 million UK households owning a pet in 2022*, there’s a good chance you live with a beloved animal yourself. Could you bear the thought of having to give up your pet? Sadly for an increasing number of people, that’s a situation they find themselves in due to the cost-of-living crisis.
A recent RSPCA survey** found that one in five pet owners are worried about the cost of feeding their animals. We have found more than three quarters think the cost-of-living crisis will impact their beloved pets. We know people are struggling to afford insurance, vet bills, and even very basic needs like food. You can help us to help them. As this financial strain grows, the RSPCA’s work to protect animals from cruelty, neglect, and abandonment is needed now more than ever.

Nina and her Chihuahua, Violet, attended our Christmas drop in session with Newcastle food bank in 2023. Violet was provided with essential pet provisions including pet food and some festive doggy treats for under the tree.
Nina says: “The cost of living crisis has had an effect on my circumstances. I have a large family to support and I have to travel around. This means that my needs come to the bottom of the list. Violet means everything to me and she helps me through day by day.”
We’re seeking £1.27 million to help us expand our successful Pet Food Bank project across England and Wales.
The project works with communities that are particularly vulnerable to the effects of the cost-of-living crisis. We support them so they can tackle pet welfare and wellbeing issues before they develop into something much worse. The RSPCA will connect a pet owner in crisis with their nearest food bank as well as provide pet welfare advice, signpost them to further services and provide practical support. The project also works with manufacturers and retailers to collect pet food donations and deliver supplies to food banks for owners and animals in need. The cost-of-living crisis means the service is more in demand than ever. In doing this, we not only keep more pets and pet owners together, we also reduce pressure on RSPCA centres, which are full to bursting.
