What is Evie’s Gift?
Evie’s Gift is a charity dedicated to the memory of Evie Clover, who passed away from a brain tumour in 2018, when she was 13.

Her father, Bryan, set up the charity in her name after seeing first-hand how many parents slept on chairs in the ward or in their cars, went without food, and incurred heavy parking and travel costs whilst their critically ill children were being treated in hospital.
What does Evie’s Gift do?
We partner with major hospitals across the country in cities including Bristol, Liverpool, Birmingham, London and Manchester, to ensure parents and carers in financial hardship receive the support they need when their child is hospitalised with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. We award grants to assist with food and travel costs. We can also pay for hotel accommodation immediately after a child is admitted so that parents from out of area have somewhere to rest.
What does your support look like in practice?
Meet Arthur.

At two weeks, he was diagnosed with something called coarctation of the aorta, a life-threatening heart condition requiring immediate surgery. He was transferred by critical care ambulance to Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, an hour and a half’s drive from home.
The hospital was only able to provide accommodation for one night due to the volume of parents with critically ill children on site. So the Family Liaison Team got in touch with us and asked if we could help. We subsequently paid for several nights of hotel accommodation while Arthur underwent life-saving surgery. We also awarded food and travel grants to help the family manage the unexpected costs that go along with having a child in hospital.
So how is Arthur doing now???
Well….

Pretty well! Here he is with big sis, Evie, and big bro, Barnaby.
Arthur’s mum, Vicky, had this to say:
‘Until you're in a position of need you don’t really appreciate what charities like Evie’s Gift do. They are just incredible, and without them our experience would have been so much harder. When your child is sick you don’t think about sleep, food, money or travel costs, so to have someone else think about that side of things means you can just focus on being the best parent you can be. Arthur is now one and he is doing well. He has another heart condition, but with regular scans and monitoring we are hoping he’ll be okay and live a normal life. Evie’s Gift will forever be in our hearts.’
Why £10,000?
£10,000 will help us support up to 100 families (impacting up to 1,000 people) with a critically ill child, which will ensure we can meet the demand for our support over the coming months. It will enable us to make sure families are able to cover food and travel costs whilst they’re in hospital. It will also make it possible for us to cover the cost of a hotel for parents who would otherwise be forced to sleep in their car or in a chair on the ward while their child is being treated.
Why now?
A 2020 University of York study shows that the number of children in England with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions has risen from 32,975 in 2001-2 to 86,625 in 2017-8. These increases are continuing. Additionally, the cost-of-living crisis has severely impacted many families' financial wellbeing. We're particularly aware of the impact on single-parent families with a critically ill child.
Where will my money go?
All the money raised will go directly towards helping those families who need it most. You help us, we help them. Simple!
Why should I support Evie’s Gift?
Often, the parents we support are referred to us whilst in a state of shock - their child may have become ill very suddenly, received a completely unexpected diagnosis, or been involved in a life-changing accident. It’s almost impossible to focus on practicalities at a time like this. Supporting our work will enable us to assist parents and carers when they are at their most vulnerable.
But what’s in it for me?
As well as contributing to a brilliant cause, a donation of £10 or more will automatically enter you into our prize draw. If you donate £10 you'll receive one prize draw ticket entry. If you donate £20, you’ll receive two, and so on.
What would it mean to Evie’s Gift if the full amount was raised?
So much! We understand one of the most terrifying things a parent can face is the sense of powerlessness that goes along with having a critically ill child. Our work ensures they don’t have to face it alone.
Great. Oh, one last thing... what happened to Effy?
We’re really pleased to say Effy received life-saving surgery shortly after the photo at the top was taken.
Here she is on her first birthday…

Go Effy!
